This is a "how-to" resource for you as parents on this cool tool we call the Mood meter. Your kids should be familiar with this as it is a district wide strategy that we use to increase emotional intelligence and emotion ID and many classrooms use it daily. You can continue this practice at home by making your very own mood meter all you need is paper and crayons. You can even make it a family activity by having everyone check-in every morning and evening. Add some math into the mix by graphing your moods while we are out of school. BONUS points if you share a picture with me! :)
There are several different breathing strategies and techniques to help kids learn to regulate using their own body warning signs and breathing. This is a fun breathing with fish exercise to have your child practice at home.

I am also able to mail you a copy if this is something that you would like to use please let me know via the parent contact form on the home screen.
The Way I Feel - Read Aloud
Use this read aloud as a tool to talk to your kids about all different feelings. Some great questions to ask as you are reading are: when do you feel this way? What does your body feel like when you are experiencing that feeling? Is it easy to tell when someone else is feeling this way? Does your body give you any secret clues that a BIG feeling is coming? (examples: hands sweating, heart racing, fist clenching etc.)

(the o in Holly is a zero)Just like with our favorite sport or game we have to practice coping if we want to become better at it! We would never go out on the court for a basketball game against a tough team without practicing first so why would we take on big feelings without practice? These scenarios help you exercise your brain and prepare it for taking on those big feelings when you are in the moment.
We all need tools in our toolbox. Some of our coping skills are what we call "external" these are the fun ones that we can see someone using like playing legos, using a fidget, or writing in a journal. As we get older and get more practice we can start using "internal" coping skills. Those are what I like to call my secret spy skills because I can use them without anybody knowing! Answer the questions on this page to start building your internal strategies.
