Mental health issues span a broad spectrum of conditions, ranging from mood disorders like depression and bipolar disorder to anxiety disorders. Athletes may struggle with any of the following disorders. Psychotic disorders can distort thinking and perception. Substance use like alcohol or drugs can intertwine with mental health concerns. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, center around distorted body image and unhealthy eating habits (Barton and Paul). According to Kindbridge personality disorders like borderline personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder, can affect how individuals can relate to others. ADHD causes difficulty in focusing. PTSD develops after exposure to traumatic events, causing distressing memories. OCD involves intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that interfere with life. Disorders like autism can affect interaction, communication, and behavior. Additionally adjustment disorders arise in response to significant life stressors, leading to emotional and behavioral disturbances (Kindbridge).
Outside world problems can also affect an athlete or individual significantly. There are many types of outside problems, some in which we have talked about but others like gambling addictions, schoolwork, appearance, hazing and many more. Additionally, alcohol and drugs can severely affect an athlete's performance by reducing focus, making injuries more probable for many athletes experiencing hazing. Hazing is when something is expected of an individual when joining or participating in a group humiliates and that abuses a person.
