Theme: How We Express Ourselves.
This term, we will be following different lines of inquiry to help us find out about how "stories may be told in different ways depending on when they were created".
Our lines of inquiry include:
What stories are. (Form)
How storytelling has changed over time. (Change)
Why stories are told. (Causation)
In Science, we investigated properties of materials. Our main theory that we were testing was 'Stone is the best material to write a story on for it to last 30,000 years.' We tested different materials as to whether they were permeable, magnetic, translucent and waterproof. This was to see which material was the least affected.
This term we had a virtual workshop with the National Gallery to talk all about myths and legends and how that can be displayed through Art. This linked really well with our Unit Of Inquiry as we have been inquiring all about the different ways stories are told. The children got to listen to a soundscape that was made by the gallery to try and envision what some of the paintings were going to be before we saw them.
On the last two days of term, year 5 were lucky enough to receive a visit from an author named Ian MacDonald. During his visit, Ian discussed with the children how to become an author and what it's like being an author. We then had the opportunity to spend two days creating our own version of his published book- 'The Mummy's Finger.' Ian discussed with each class what each chapter should be including and we focused on a different skill for each one. The children also got to take part in some role play which they thoroughly enjoyed.
At the end of the sessions, Ian had brought in some books for the children to be able to purchase! They were all very excited and have been reading the books since!
