Theme: How The World Works .
This module, we will be looking at scientific observations of the Earth can create curiosity and lead to new discoveries.
Our lines of inquiry include:
How scientists create medicine (function)
How medicines have changed over time (change)
How medicines made in the past have helped us in the 21st Century (connection)
Art
In art, we looked at the work of Rogan Brown who creates sculptures out of paper. We then tried out a number of different paper sculpture techniques.
World Book Day!
Indoor PE- Fitness
The children have been getting their sweat on this term! They have learnt about repetitions (reps) and sets and have been doing multiple sets of various exercises.
Inquiry/ Outdoor Learning- Herbal medicines
In our outdoor learning, the children had the opportunity to use a variety of herbs and natural plants to make traditional medicines / remedies. We discussed what some natural leaves and herbs can do to heal certain ailments and illnesses.
RE- What God means to people in different faiths/ world views
In RE, the children have begun to learn about what God (Allah) means to Muslims. They will do the same for different faiths and worldviews, including Judaism and they will also look at creation stories.
History- History of medicines
In History, we have focused on the history of medicines, linking to our PYP unit of inquiry this term. So far we have looked at how medicine and medical tools have evolved since the time of Ancient Greece. We learned about Hippocrates and how he is the father of modern medicine, who was the first doctor to believe in science behind illness, rather than superstition. We also learned about the hippocratic oath that doctors today still take!
Geography- India
In Geography, we have been learning about the continent of Asia, specifically India. We have looked at the human geography and the physical geography of India.
PSHE- Healthy bodies
In PSHE, we have been learning about the effects of certain chemicals on the body, such as nicotine and alcohol. We have discussed various terms including peer pressure and also discussed negative effects of alcohol and nicotine. The pictures show the children matching up a puzzle with facts about alcohol's effect on the body. The children have also looked at emergency aid including medicine.
Music- Ukulele
In music, we are continuing to learn to play the Ukulele with Mrs Collins.
Science- Forces Workshop
Linked to our science this module, both Year 5 classes enjoyed an exciting Forces Workshop Day where they took part in a range of practical investigations. Throughout the day, the children explored how different forces act upon objects, including gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance. They worked scientifically by making predictions, testing ideas, measuring results and discussing their findings. The hands-on activities helped them to see how forces affect movement and deepened their understanding through real-life experiments. It was a fun and engaging way to bring their science learning to life.
PE- Spartan Sports Basketball
In some of our basketball lessons this module, we are being supported by Spartan Sports.
