Theme: How We Organise Ourselves.
This term, we will be following different lines of inquiry to help us find out about "a range of systems that can be used to connect communities around the world."
Our lines of inquiry include:
Types of systems (Form)
How systems connect with each other (Connection)
How systems have changed with the developing technological world (Change)
Road Safety Week is an annual event, usually held in November, that teaches children key messages about staying safe near roads. This year, our focus in Year 5 was on keeping safe as pedestrians and understanding how to cross the road responsibly. This is an essential lesson for all, especially as so many of our Year 5 children walk to and/or from school independently.
We began by exploring safe ways to cross the road. The children discussed why we follow the “stop, look and listen” routine and considered modern challenges, such as the quietness of electric cars, which make relying on sound alone unsafe.
We also talked about choosing safe places to cross, avoiding hazards such as hills, bends and gaps between parked vehicles. To build on this learning, the class watched a KS2 road safety video on the THINK! website. They then put their knowledge to the test with a fun Kahoot quiz, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Later, the children took part in an online game that required them to make decisions about the safest locations to cross the road on a journey to school. To complete the week, they worked through a road safety activity sheet to consolidate their learning and reflect on the importance of staying safe around roads.
Year 5 demonstrated excellent engagement throughout and gained valuable knowledge to help them stay safe in their daily lives.
