Navigating the challenges of adolescence can be exciting and scary for young people. Children in grades 5-8 are reflecting on who they are and who they want to become. They are determining their values, evaluating life influences, and forming/reforming friendships. It is a pivotal and influential time in their lives. At HMS Middle School, it is a priority to not only teach our students, but support them in learning their own life lessons through experiences, challenges, and mistakes.
Utilizing our Hawk mascot, we use the acronym W.I.N.G.S. to teach our students the importance of Working together, having Integrity, to Never give up, to be Generous in spirit (kind), and to Show respect. Focusing on positive behaviors, students are often rewarded with HAWK Tickets for consistently "showing our WINGS", by demonstrating these important values in their every day interactions with others.
The students at HMS Middle School are a diverse group of young learners who demonstrate a strong sense of community, curiosity, and resilience. They are growing into thoughtful individuals who show respect for one another and take pride in their school. Many of our students exhibit kindness, empathy, and a willingness to support their peers, contributing to a welcoming and inclusive school culture.
In terms of attitude, HMS students are increasingly aware of the importance of a positive mindset. While they are still learning how to navigate challenges, they show a genuine desire to grow academically and personally. They bring energy and creativity to the classroom and are open to exploring new ideas, even when the work is tough.
When it comes to effort, our students rise to the occasion. They are learning the value of hard work and persistence. Whether they are preparing for assessments, participating in group projects, or engaging in extracurricular activities, our middle school Hawks put forth their best effort and take ownership of their learning. While not every student is at the same place in their learning and developmental journey, the overall commitment to improvement and progress is evident throughout the school.
