HMS Middle School is located in Sanborn, Iowa, in Northwest Iowa that is thriving and growing. Our district is a combination of three close-knit communities. You will immediately notice the friendliness and "small-town nice" when you visit these three towns. Nearly everything we need is within walking distance and everyone is a neighbor! We are grateful to our community businesses and organizations who are committed to supporting the students and teachers of HMS.
The Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn (HMS) Community School District was formed in 1991, with the merger of the Hartley-Melvin and Sanborn school districts. The district's High School and Elementary School are located in nearby Hartley. In 2018, with the passing of a school bond, what was once the original Sanborn Community School received major renovations and is now the home of HMS Middle School. HMS is part of the War Eagle Conference and our mascot is The Hawk.
We currently serve 160 students in grades 5-8 at HMS Middle School and have 21 teachers and 10 support staff. Our curriculum aligns with the Iowa Core Standards and our teachers follow the PLC (Professional Learning Community) Model for instruction. Through this model, our staff consistently reflects on four guiding questions: 1) What do we want our students to know? (our standards), 2) How will we know when they've learned it? (our assessments), 3) What will we do if they don't learn it? (our interventions), and 4) What will we do if they do learn it? (our extensions).
