Analysing musical theatre

Musical theatre is its own style of theatre, it contains singing, acting and dancing. Therefore musical theatre performers need to keep up with this demand and have ability in all three, this is called a triple threat. Before we went into lockdown my students were working hard towards cleaning and perfecting their chosen musical of Peter Pan, they had already booked in 6 full shows to Primary schools and started publicising their public shows. They shows Peter Pan because they wanted to work in the style of children's theatre, because over the last two years they hadn't worked in this style for a full project. They also wanted to be able to invite local primary schools and give back to their community. The task I have for you next is a task I gave my own students therefore you may find challenging and that is ok, just try your best and complete every section of the research task to the best of your ability.

Task

Every year I give my students the opportunity to research and propose a musical to be the annual show. They have to ensure it is suitable, discuss licensing with license houses, go through casting requirements etc. I am not going to get you to do this in as much detail, but your task is to research and chose and extract or a section of musical theatre we could do as a group for your initial unit 2 developing skills unit that was discussed in the course overview. But there are perimeters to your choice, you can't just pick anything.

To include:

1). It has to be at least 10 minutes in length, state which section and why

2). It should be of a professional standard but with room to be adapted based on ability, state any possible issues that may arise, set, props, difficulty and suggest ways in which we could overcome this

3). You need to be able to find access to the original repertoire for the group to be able to watch, include the link to the work

4). It should be suitable and challenging for performer of all abilities. For example if could be 20 minutes of a certain musical but the way you'd audition and cast, dancers may be able to be principal dance roles for a certain number but then it gives opportunity for acting sections and singing. You can also suggest a medley as long as you say which scenes/songs etc. and why

You can complete this task however you like, it may be a flyer, leaflet, poster, a presentation etc.
