Devising theatre is an important aspect of the course and also the performing arts world. The best performers don't just perform they are able to be creative as well, this will result in them having a long lasting career and moving into different roles as their career continues. On the course you devise as a group and as a solo. I give you the tools to be able to do so and the confidence and continually check in and guide you.
Emma Rice: Kneehigh: Making a show
One way I encourage all performing arts students to develop their devising skills is to watch theatre! Whenever you get the chance, this will open your mind and broaden your experience, it will inspire you and give you new ideas. It may be going to the theatre or viewing it online. At the moment we are unable to go to the theatre as planned but luckily lots of companies have been putting their work on digital platforms for us to watch. Therefore we may not be able to devise as a group as usual but you can be inspired.
Your task is to watch a new piece of theatre. I have added some below and some links as where to find some. Once you have watched it I want you to answer the following questions:
1). Give me a brief overview in your own words (this is called a synopsis)
2). What discipline (drama, dance, musical theatre) was it?
3). What style would you describe it as? (Contemporary, classical, abstract, naturalistic, modern). If you are unsure about styles then just give me a description in your own words to give me a feel for what you thought.
4). Name 3 elements of the work or sections of the work you liked and why
5). If you were to be in the piece what section or character would you want to perform?
6). How would you make changes to the piece if you were able to?
7). Who do you think the target audience is?
