Sentencing

As part of the 'Legal System' module in year 1 you will examine sentencing in criminal law. You will look at the aims of sentencing, types of sentence available and the factors which influence which sentence a judge/ lay magistrate gives. You will also evaluate sentencing within the UK.

Follow the link to the 'You be the Judge' interactive website set up by gov.uk

The website includes a range of real cases, from murder and manslaughter to mugging and vandalism. You can select the case you are interested in and then will be able to find out about the facts within the case. Once you have examined the facts you will be able to decide what sentence you would give if you were the judge hearing the case. Once you have decided the sentence you would give you will able to see what the real judge in the case decided.
