Do you need to have previous experience to be in the Rancho Pico Music Program?
No! There are beginning level classes and it is never too late to learn an instrument! Sign up for Beginning Band, Beginning Orchestra, or Beginning Choir.
Do you need to already read music for Band, Choir and/or Orchestra classes?
No! You will learn to read music in any choir, band, or orchestra class.
Do you get a grade for Band, Choir and Orchestra?
Yes. Grading is based on participation and playing tests. Most of our work is group work. There is usually no written homework, just practicing your instrument.
Do you miss class to participate in Rancho Pico Music?
No. Unlike local elementary programs, you do NOT get pulled out of other classes to participate in music class at Rancho Pico. Music classes are just like any other class and students meet just as often. Imagine getting as much music instruction as math and history!
Does music require a lot of time outside of school?
No. Most groups have just 3 concerts a year and require no outside rehearsals.
Do you have to audition to be in Band, Choir, or Orchestra?
No! The groups that require an audition are the advanced level groups. If you have previous experience and don’t feel ready to audition, just enroll in an Intermediate or Beginning level class.
Can you be in both Band/Orchestra and Choir?
No. Unfortunately, you only get to choose one elective in junior high.
What instruments do you offer?
For orchestra these include: violin, viola, cello, bass
For band: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion (xylophone and drums).
I already play an instrument, what should I do?
You have a choice to make: You may either enroll in an Intermediate level class (either band or strings) or you may audition for the advanced level classes. Check the band and orchestra website.
Does the school own any instruments that I can use?
Maybe! Rancho Pico has a small inventory of some instruments The school has the following instruments available: viola, bass, French horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba. Talk to Mrs. Stoffel if you are interested in any of these, it is a first come first serve basis.
