Welcome! If you're wondering whether CADA Leadership Camp is the right fit for your student, you're in the right place. I’ve been bringing students to camp for decades, and I’ve even sent my own daughter. Here’s what you need to know.
CADA (California Association of Directors of Activities) Leadership Camp is a four-day experience designed to develop student leaders. It’s held at UC Santa Barbara, right by the ocean. Students take part in leadership training, project planning, and community-building that they bring back to school in the fall.
CADA Leadership Camp is a mix of middle and high school student leaders from across California. The Santa Clarita Valley is very well represented; in past years we have had high school student leaders from Canyon, Golden Valley, Valencia, West Ranch, Saugus, Castaic, and Academy of the Canyons, while we've had middle school delegations from Castaic Middle School, Sierra Vista Junior High School, and of course, Rio Norte.
Two credentialed teachers (usually myself and the ASB Director) drive district vans directly to UC Santa Barbara. We meet early in the morning, load up, and head up the coast for an unforgettable four-day adventure.
Students stay in the UCSB dorms, usually in San Nicholas or San Miguel Hall. The environment is safe and supervised, with credentialed teachers guiding the experience. And while middle schoolers are a small group (usually about 60-70 out of 425 total students) they are far from overlooked. In fact, they’re something of a novelty at camp. High school student leaders often go out of their way to support and mentor the younger students, creating a warm, welcoming environment where middle schoolers feel seen, celebrated, and included.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the experience:
Councils: Students are placed into “councils”--small leadership teams that work on a school-wide project together, developing planning, creativity, and teamwork.
Motivational Speakers: Three dynamic speakers share lessons in leadership, resilience, and self-belief.
Workshops: Students attend “Meet the Pros” sessions outdoors to learn from experienced educators and student leaders.
Talent Show: There’s always time for fun. Students can participate in the camp talent show and proudly represent our school!
Reflection Night: The final night includes a slideshow and reflection, helping students take stock of what they’ve learned and how they’ll take it back to their school.
The cost for the full four-day experience is $560, which includes:
Dorm-style housing at UCSB
All meals while at camp
Camp programming and materials
Transportation (paid for by the school)
I’ve been involved with CADA since the 1990s, but I truly saw it differently when I sent my own daughter. Watching her grow from a quiet sixth grader into a confident, empowered leader was a game-changer. This summer, my daughter (just finishing her first year of college) will be working for her fourth summer as the CADA Camp DJ (DJ Libi!!). Your child will be surrounded by adults who care deeply and student leaders who model kindness, confidence, and inclusion.
For summer 2026, the camp we are attending runs July 17–20. We leave early morning on Day 1 and return between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Day 4.
This summer, Rio Norte has reserved 12 spots total (six spots for ASB and six spots for RioTV) and they go quickly. If you're ready to say yes:
Text Mr. Ippolito directly or email me with the subject line:
"Yes—We're in for CADA Leadership Camp!"
After that, I will walk you through the next steps for payment and forms.
