I am Michael Owston, Mr. "O" and I am currently the Theatre teacher at Rio Norte Junior High School in Santa Clarita, CA.
I have been involved in the theatre for over 35 years as an actor, director, producer and designer. I have over 15 years experience in the Not-for-Profit arena with a focus in Arts Management. I spent 12 years as the Artistic Director of The Repertory East Playhouse, an 81 seat professional theatre that was located in Newhall, California. I have directed/produced over 100 shows and special events.
My journey to become a teacher at this stage in my life began at Hart High School in the CTE Program as an instructor in Technical Theatre. It was here that I gained a calling to teach. I have been lucky to have spent my life in the theatre and doing what I love. I felt it was time to share that passion with others.
I am not asking students to step outside of their comfort zone. I am simply asking that they expand their comfort zone. I believe the skills provided in a theatre class can translate to any part of ones life and career. Theatre is an inclusive art form that anyone can participate in and learn from. From the young and struggling ELL student to the seasoned professional, theatre can offer a skill set that can be used outside of the theatre classroom setting.
I have a BA in Theatre from Western Michigan University, a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Theatre at California State University East Bay and a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction at Grand Canyon University.
The Rio Norte Theatre Department offers two dynamic paths for young artists to grow. Intermediate Drama (T2) serves as a foundational launchpad, focusing on ensemble building and sharpening essential theatre and acting skills. For students ready for a professional challenge, Production Drama (Drama Hawks) tackles the rigor of full-scale productions, including advanced theatre techniques, stagecraft, and technical theatre. Whether you are mastering a complex monologue, working as a designer or in a leadership role, we provide a supportive environment for every artist to shine.
