At AOC, we offer classes specializing in wellness and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). These electives are available to juniors and seniors.
Our previous Social and Emotional Learning classes (A-D) have been discontinued in favor of our new, career technical education (CTE) pathway for students interested in a rigorous study of the growing employment field of Family and Human Services, including but not limited to careers related to psychology, sociology, nursing, pre-med, and education. Students will learn about essential wellness and safety issues for all life stages while developing professional and interpersonal skills in service leadership, inclusive collaboration, crisis management, effective communications, and professional ethics. Students will understand the organizational roles and scope of responsibilities for family and human services organizations and agencies and apply positive guidance strategies to advocate for client independence and social engagement for overall health and well-being. Additionally, in year two, students take on the role of Peer Service Leaders who will work to maintain and strengthen the AOC climate by promoting a balanced lifestyle and providing AOC students the resources needed to foster a healthy community. PSLs  will be directly responsible for maintenance of the Wellness Room, the planning of school-wide wellness events, the creation of activities and resources, and the implementation of other projects that support a healthy school climate. Students who complete all four classes in this sequence will earn a CTE certificate.
Comms Mgmt is a project-based, interactive course that emphasizes understanding of self and others by building collaborative skills and connections with peers, staff, and AOC alumni. Students will work together to discover and develop their collaborative strengths and learn to utilize their skills and talents in the pursuit of a shared vision: college and career readiness, as well as occupational wellness, for AOC students. Students will build and maintain online platforms, present college and career information to peers, provide mentorship to underclassmen, work collectively with peers on self-designed and department projects, and develop and maintain relationships with AOC alumni.
