We will expand on skills learned in previous years and learn so many new skills in math this year! We will be working with the eVisions Math Curriculum. Most of our year is focused on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. We will also cover algebra, patterns, coordinate graphs, and measurement and data.
Math Facts:
In fifth grade it is vital that students know their math facts. Reflex is a great website to practice facts. Students can use Reflex as needed to stay sharp.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned most nights of the week. Homework is important practice that needs to be completed daily. Homework assignments handed in late, will not be given any credit.
Assessments:
Students will typically be given a few days notice of any upcoming assessments. They should study the skills that we have been working on in class. Students can refer to their workbook for the most recent skills practiced in class. The topic review and reteaching pages in each topic are excellent resources to study for tests.
Google Classroom - There will be a section for each topic with study materials, practice questions, games etc. specific to the skills taught in the topic. This is a great way to practice or even study for your tests.
Reflex - Practice your math facts! Use the teacher username: Ms. Heitman.
My Path - My Path is a digital math platform that we will be using. Students take a diagnostic test in the beginning of the year, mid year and end of the year. This test will create a customized math path for your child. There will be lessons that are specific to the skills your child needs to work on and the lessons can range from kindergarten level through sixth grade. The goal is for students to work on this for a minimum of 30 minutes per week and pass 2 lessons per week. Class time will be given to work, but students are also encouraged to work on it at home as well. Students will need to log into Google and then log into the site through Clever. Here are directions for logging in from home.
Game Center - Scroll down to the Grade 5 section to see a variety of games you can use to practice the skills we learn in 5th grade.
Topic and Lesson Support - This is a GREAT resource for students needing homework help and review. This would also be a great resource to use if you are absent and want to see what we worked on in a specific lesson. On the website, in the top right corner, choose the topic we are working on. It will give you an overview of the topic. Once on that page, you can pick the specific lesson on the left side of the page to see videos, examples, and additional practice opportunities.
