Welcome to the THMS STEM Academy

The Thomas Harrison Middle School STEM program is in its sixth year. Students apply for the STEM Academy in the spring of their sixth grade year. In the six years since the program's inception, our STEM enrollment has increased 500%. We are committed to expanding and diversifying our program. We are currently exploring ways to grow our STEM space in order to accommodate the increased interest in STEM.

The STEM Explorations Academy program is an integrated science and engineering course that spans two periods, one core period and one elective period. Students in 7th grade will meet the requirements for Life Science and Introduction to Technology, while students in 8th grade will meet the requirements for Physical Science and Foundations of Technology. All Virginia science Standards of Learning, as well as Technology Competencies are covered. Science and Technology standards are taught through open-ended engineering design challenges where students work in teams to design and build a solution to an identified problem.
