Any student who is currently enrolled in sixth grade at Thomas Harrison Middle School is eligible to apply to the THMS STEM Academy. Students enrolling at THMS after the application process is completed may apply the following year. Qualified students will then be admitted during their 8th grade year if space becomes available.
The application process begins when Mr. DeVier-Scott visits each sixth grade class. This gives students a chance to learn about the STEM program and ask questions in a small audience. The sixth grade students then visit the STEM room and have the opportunity to participate in small group STEM activities lead by the 7th grade STEM students. The sixth graders are encouraged to ask questions of the 7th grade students while they are working. After the application process is complete, students are notified by mail before the end of the school year.
The STEM application period for the 2018-2019 school year will begin in late January and conclude by early March. The 6th grade students will be visiting the 7th grade STEM space on January 29, February 1, or February 2. Each group of 40 sixth graders will participate in a STEM activity, have peer conversations with the 7th grade STEM students, and hear about the STEM program and application process. At the end of the visit, students will be given a STEM cover letter and application to take home. The due date for applications is February 9. If you have questions, don't hesitate to contact me.
