HCS will offer Virtual School for the following grade levels and programs during the 2025-2026 School Year:
HC Virtual Elementary (Grades K-5) Imagine Learning--Buzz
HC Virtual Middle School (Grades 6-8) Edgenuity
HC Virtual High School (Grades 9-12) Edgenuity
The virtual program is a RIGOROUS program where students complete work independently using an online platform. Teachers are there for support as needed, but they do not provide live instruction for middle and high school.
Elementary school students will be required to attend daily meets with live instruction.
This program is ONLY FOR STUDENTS CURRENTLY RESIDING WITHIN THE HARDIN COUNTY SCHOOLS DISTRICT.
Students wanting to attend HCVS must Complete a Virtual School APPLICATION (see Enrollment page). As a part of this application process, a committee will review each application.
The committee will review student behavior, transcripts/report cards, attendance (participation), previous success in online platforms, and IReady/KSA/CERT/ACT scores. High school students should be on grade level and making adequate progress toward their diploma.
Please know that we require the same 26 credits for graduation consistent with the other Hardin County High Schools; CHHS, JHHS, and NHHS. We also offer an academic studies diploma for students. We are NOT a program for early graduation.
Participation for students who are eligible for IDEA services will be determined by the ARC to ensure student needs are able to be met in a virtual format.
Specially designed instruction for students with disabilities is provided in brief live sessions with a special education teacher/service provider, as determined by the accommodations listed in the student’s IEP. All students will be required to participate in scheduled sessions to remain in the program.
Elementary students should be able to read well enough to independently complete the online program with support at home as needed.
Students must have their own device (laptop or desktop) and access to reliable internet. Parents must have a working email and phone number as parent communication is crucial to our program.
If the student application is accepted, the student (along with a parent/guardian) must come in person to enroll, either at Open House or an individual session.
Each parent/guardian (along with the student) must sign a Memorandum of Agreement /Contract which outlines the expectations of the program. (Please refer to the student expectations and Memorandum of Agreement below)
Once the student is accepted and enrolls in the Virtual School, they are no longer considered to be a student of the school where they reside in the district. The Virtual School will NOT have extra curricular activities or sports. Virtual School students will NOT be allowed to participate in activities at their districted school or attend classes at the Early College and Career Center (EC3).
IMPORTANT!!
Removal from Hardin County Virtual School may occur for the following reasons:
Inappropriate conduct or communication through the Virtual Programs may be grounds for dismissal from Virtual School, and/or may result in disciplinary action consistent with the HCS Code of Conduct.
Students must maintain a passing grade in all courses and attend required meets as scheduled. All students are evaluated twice a trimester. Halfway through the grading period, students failing 2 or more courses will be placed on probation and will have 2 weeks to bring all courses up to passing. Failure to do so will result in early dismissal from the program. If students fail courses they will be REQUIRED to return to their in-person school at the end of a trimester as well.
Failure to attend Google Meets with teachers. If they cannot attend, they must let the teacher know in advance to reschedule.
Failure of parents to maintain working contact information. It is the expectation of virtual school for staff to be able to reach both parents and students in a timely manner.
Memorandum of Agreement / Contract
HC Virtual School students & parents must commit to the following:
Ensure access to a working device (Chromebook, laptop, desktop) and strong, reliable internet for the duration of time enrolled in HCS Virtual School. Devices are not provided by the virtual school.
Parent/Guardian will serve as an important partner in their students’ learning, therefore they will commit to an in-person technology training session prior to the start of the school year. This will be completed at either open house or during an individual intake session.
Complete all assignments and tasks independently without copying the work of others or having others do their work---all work submitted must be of the student's own creation.
ELEMENTARY ONLY: Daily attendance is required for this program. Students are required to do coursework online and attend live teaching on a schedule 5 days a week. Students may be marked absent for missing live teaching or not completing coursework online. Attendance and truancy laws and policies are applicable to the elementary program.
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ONLY: Students will be expected to devote the amount of time necessary to pass courses and remain on schedule for each trimester grading period. This is typically 4 hours a day, but can vary depending on the student and the course load.
Students will be expected to come in person for assessments (l-Ready Diagnostic, Kentucky Summative Assessments, ACT) as much as once a trimester throughout the year.
Comply with the Virtual School teachers for task completion on assignments, quizzes, and assessments.
Maintain passing grades at all times; stay at or ahead of the pace of assigned material.
Spend extra time on completing tasks/assignments if starting the program after the beginning of the school year; this is necessary to complete all required work prior to the end of the trimester.
Maintain an appropriate, respectful tone with Virtual School teachers and staff at all times both verbally and in written form.
Students/Families will communicate with the Virtual School teachers and staff through HCS Email and Direct Phone calls. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT PARENTS PROVIDE A WORKING EMAIL ADDRESS FOR COMMUNICATIONS.
Comply with any other directions or guidelines communicated by the Virtual School teachers and staff.
Any change of residence, phone contact information, e-mail address, etc. must be communicated to the Virtual School immediately.
Students who receive IDEA services must participate in sessions with a special education teacher and/or service provider on a set schedule. The platform, length and frequency of these sessions shall be determined by the ARC.
Students may transition back to their district home school at the end of a quarter or trimester. Once they choose to leave the Virtual School they will not be allowed to return during the calendar school year.
