Trauma and the Impact of Teaching and Learning on Minority Students
Presented by: Dr. Carrie Awadzi
Covid 19 has dramatically disrupted the way students learn, particularly minority students. This “new normal” has challenged the way educators teach and has educational leaders questioning whether we are effectively serving students' mental, physical, emotional, and educational needs.
The current research on youth trauma in educational contexts has offered encouraging opportunities, resources, programs, and practices that optimize successful outcomes for trauma-exposed youth. In this workshop, participants will learn about Trauma and the Impact of Teaching and Learning on Minority Students. We will discuss the importance understanding trauma in higher education and introduce practices that can be used by all instructors. Participants will develop a plan for trauma-informed best practices related to historical and ongoing traumas, as well as traumas related to COVID 19.
The attendees will learn:
· Trauma defined
· Common Trauma Triggers
· The impact of trauma on students learning
· Recognized and observing students through a trauma-impacted lens
· Best practices for supporting and encouraging minority students to overcome trauma and attain academic, social, and personal success

Resocializing the College Student: Approaches to Facilitate Effective Return to 2021 Face-to-Face Teaching and Learning
Presented by: Drs. Michele Lee Kozimor-King & Barbara Prince
Resocialization is a term used by sociologists to refer to a process in which an individual is taught new norms, values, and practices often in a new environment where the old rules no longer apply. Resocialization into fall 2021 will be more stressful than the typical socialization to college process as all students must unlearn customary behaviors that have served them in the online and hybrid platforms. They will be brought into contact with a new culture while being asked to transition to a new role involuntarily. Using empirical evidence from the most recent scholarship of teaching and learning, we will present the barriers and tools needed by faculty to become agents of resocialization by assisting students back into the culture of the face-to-face environment. In this interactive Zoom workshop, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences, expectations, and anxieties as we carve out a plan to develop a new culture of learning.
