The US is made up of 50 states and numerous territories around the world. 48 of its states are connected in the middle of North America. These states are all interconnected with the world's most extensive highway system.
Much of the US is flat, fertile land that is predominately used for farming or ranching. Mountain ranges stretch along both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The larger of these is the Rocky Mountain Range. In the West, mountains and deserts dominate except for the coast which is vibrant and bountiful.
The middle of America is known as the Great Plains, a wide stretch of flat grassland that today is used for farming and ranching. This area is also home to the vast MIssissippi River system that divides the country into East and West.
The United states has abundant natural resources. It is a large country and has deposits of most metals, including rare earth materials, and massive quantities of energy resources such as coal, oil, solar, and wind. The US has a healthy mining and forestry industry as well. The US is well known for its agricultural resources. It is global top three producer of beef, chicken, soybeans, corn, wheat, sorghum, dairy, and nuts.
The US is also highly industrialized. It leads the world in hi-tech manufacturing industries like AI, aviation, computers, military machinery, and space flight.
The US has several main climate types. The South has mostly subtropical climates similar to that of Taiwan while the North and Midwest have continental temperate climates that see lots of temperature change between seasons. The Western climates are dominated by the mountains except for the West coast which has a Mediterranean climate.
As this map shows, most of the US's 300 million people live in the Eastern half of the country. With the exception of the West coast, much of the Middle and Western parts of the US are very sparsely populated. The distant states of Alaska and Hawaii are also sparsely populated.
Made by millions of years of erosion, the Grand Canyon is one of America's most iconic natural landmarks.
