Phonics

Ability to understand that letters are linked to sounds (phonemes) in order to develop knowledge of letter/sound correspondences and spelling patterns
When helping a child at home who is still working on their phonics skills:
- Prompt them to look for sounds or phonetic patterns that they already know
- Use their knowledge of sound/symbol correspondence to sound the word out
- Reread the word

Ability to read quickly, accurately and automatically without hesitation
Essential to reading comprehension
Things parents can do at home:
- Prompt your child to read with expression while paying attention to the punctuation marks
- It is important not to rush through the text but rather pay attention and self-correct any mistakes that were made
- It is ok to reread a difficult text multiple times as it builds up your child’s reading fluency. Point out how fluent and accurate they sound after reading it second or third time.
- Continue to read aloud to your child as you become a model for what a fluent reader does

In 3rd grade the focus of reading changes from learning to read to reading to learn.
Your child needs to understand what they are reading in order to build their knowledge
Things that parents can do at home:
- Stop and check for comprehension with specific questions about what they are reading
- Engage in a discussion with your child and ask them to recall parts of the story or sequence of events or important facts from nonfiction selection
