Vocabulary

While your child reads give them strategies to help them understand the words. Encourage them to be curious.

Be curious about words:

read on
think about it
use prior knowledge
look closely - tap it out - chunk it - divide it into syllables - prefix - suffix - root word
look at the picture
substitute a word
look it up in the dictionary - pick the best definition
visit an online dictionary - wordsmyth or webster

Comprehension

Have in-depth conversations with your student about the text.
Prove your thinking..."On page 30, the author states..."
Make inferences and connections between texts.
