All students in the Hanover Public School District begin the Visionary Individual Planning Process (VIP2) in their 7th grade year. This plan is then used and reviewed multiple times every year until graduation. The following is a description of what the plan is, and what its purpose is.
- In the fall of 7th grade, all students learn about the Holland Code and complete the Interest Profiler. The results from this are stored in each students VIP2.
- In early spring, informational letters and a survey are sent to parents. The letters describe the purpose of VIP2, and the survey asks parents for their input about the careers and education that their student has spoken with them about. The letter and survey are provided in the home language of the student, and the survey is also available to complete on-line through Firefly.
- Meanwhile, students are divided up for individual meetings that occur with various administrators and counselors to develop their VIP2. Meetings are scheduled to occur individually, for approximately 30 minutes per meeting. The student will attend the meeting, led by either the counselor or administrator, and parents also have the option to attend. A translator/interpreter will also attend the meeting if one is necessary. The goal of the meeting is to discuss the student’s current progress in school, and to set an initial goal for post-secondary education/training. There is a focus on connecting high school course selection and post-secondary education/training with future career choice and success. Written documentation of this meeting is stored in Firefly.
- Following the initial goal setting meeting, students are expected to meet 4 times each remaining year of school (8th through 12th grades) to continue to review and refine their post-secondary goals. Students continue to discuss future career options, and focus on the education and training that is needed to achieve these goals. Again, a translator/interpreter is available if needed for these follow-up meetings.
