Week 4
Monday, August 31 -
Friday, September 4
Congratulations everyone! We made it through our second week of school and students are doing an amazing job!
We are learning what papers go home every day and where they should go in our folders. I will send graded work home on Fridays, these paper should have a star or stamp and should be coming home in the "Left at Home" side of students' folders. Behavior Logs, Homework, and Parent Forms that you need to initial/sign and return should be coming home in the "Right Back to School" side.
We have a big week this week! We begin Spelling Words this week in addition to Memory Verse, Fluency HW (Backpack Pages), and Math Facts.
We will have our first spelling quiz on Friday, please see Spelling (Pattern) Words and Memory (HFW - High-Frequency Words) Words below. There is also a printable homework sheet below.
Students will be tested on Pattern (Spelling) and Memory (HFW) nearly every week.
We will begin the year by scoring HFW at 1/2 a bonus point (no points will be lost on Memory Words) until Quarter 2.
Beginning in Quarter 2, grading for HFW will be deducted by 1/2 a point if misspelled.
Beginning in Quarter 3, HFW will be deducted a full point if misspelled.
Our Review Unit for Superkids (reading) Assessment begin this week.
This will test Phonemic Awareness (letter-sound correspondence), Phonics, Phonological Awareness (rhyming), Decoding (ability to blend letter/sounds into words), Fluency (speed, accuracy, expression), Comprehension, and Writing.
This will give a good idea of what students remember from Kindergarten.
I will be keeping these throughout the year. Grades will be noted in the gradebook, but if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.
Last week students began going to the HCS Library. We will keep our Library books in the classroom until November to help students get acclimate to having Library books that are the schools rather than from our classroom library. In November, HCS Library Books will begin coming home. I will discuss this further at that time.
Show & Tell is starting this week! Our first students for Show & Tell are Ripp and Theo. For this first Show & Tell, I will provide an "All About Me Bag (brown paper bag with description of items). I realize the brown paper lunch bag is pretty small, so, if you would like to provide a larger bag for them to bring their items, please do so.
Students will bring at picture or drawing of themselves as a baby
a picture or drawing of their family
something they like to play with or do
a picture of their favorite food
and something that is special to them.
After students' first Show & Tell, students may choose an item to bring from home to show to the class and share details about the item they brought. We will have two students each week. Each student will have 5 minutes to tell the class about the item they brought. In the past we have had students bring their favorite stuffed animal, pictures from a fun vacation, their favorite book, etc. Please help your child choose something they can bring on their show and tell day (due to allergies, please do not bring pets). Please see the Show & Tell Schedule on the Resource page as well as on the Behavior Log each week.
