What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-based learning (WBL) provides students with a continuum of career-related experiences that support their post-secondary goals, preparing young adults for education and employment after high school. Hampton City Schools, in partnership with local businesses and community organizations, offers High-Quality WBL by coordinating workplace experiences related to a student's career goal and/or interest internally in the classroom and externally in the workplace for intentional transfer of knowledge and skills. WBL is a key part of all Career and Technical courses and academy programs.

HCS students can take part in activities related to career awareness, career exploration and career preparation through work-based learning. Examples of WBL are business tours, mentoring, job shadowing, career and technical education, and paid and unpaid work experiences which include internships, apprenticeships, and clinical. Students are offered a continuum of studies that initiate mastering knowledge and skill competencies and then create authentic real-world experiences to refine those academic and technical competencies building an appropriate work ethic and attitude necessary for success and transition toward adulthood.
