Welcome back!
At Hampshire College, learning is a collaborative effort. The Center for Academic Support and Advising's (CASA) Peer Tutoring program exists to support students' in-class experience through one-on-one sessions with fellow students trained to help students work through concepts they need support with. Tutoring is not a replacement for going to class or office hours with professors or TAs but is an additional layer of structured academic support.
Peer Tutoring is free for all current Hampshire students. In the same way that our courses are interdisciplinary so is our tutoring. The general topic areas below may not encompass all the elements of the course you need support in, but your tutor can make those connections with you.
Each session is 45 minutes long and can be dedicated to a variety of different things, including understanding a certain concept problem, brainstorming for a project, or simply checking your knowledge.
Tutors will work with you at the beginning of the session to set goals and expectations for your time together. Tutoring doesn't replace going to class or office hours, but it can be a great support to help you work through things you may be struggling with.
Tutoring sessions address specific course concepts and content. Peer tutors have experience in the area you're studying and can support you to understand the subject. While you won't work on specific assignment questions or problems, tutors can help you understand what you are being asked to do and the ideas you are working with.
The Holistic Learning Program (HLP) is geared to be a broader form of support. In addition to hosting co-working, or body doubling, sessions, HLP often works with folks on understanding overall structures of assignments and big projects. HLP also hosts workshops on making calendars, building to-do lists, breaking down common essay formats, and talking about accommodations at Hampshire.
