Spend 2027 Independence Day weekend in Newport, Rhode Island, with 8Y5!
Friday starts with a class sushi dinner and an evening pot-luck welcome social. On Saturday we will start with breakfast at Miley Hall or your B&B. Noted Newport architectural historian and classmate Ross Cann ’85 (AIA, RA, M.Phil., Cambridge; M.Arch., Columbia) will lead us through the magnificent Breakers followed by lunch in its cafe. Then Ross will take us through Scully’s beloved Isaac Bell House. You may then explore your choice of Marble House, Rosecliff, or Kingscote at your leisure that afternoon or some other time during the weekend. A class dinner at Miley Hall will precede another evening pot-luck social.
On Sunday, July 4th, we will start with breakfast at Miley Hall or your B&B. We will walk to Newport's historic Colonial-era Colony House, home to a magnificent full-length Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington. Outside, we will hear a costumed reenactor read the Declaration of Independence from the very steps where Rhode Islanders first heard it proclaimed in Newport 251 years earlier. The celebration will include traditional colonial music performed by the Pawtuxet Rangers. After lunch at La Forge, overlooking the historic Newport Casino celebrated by Vincent Scully, we will attend qualifying grass-court matches at the Newport Open and browse the International Tennis Hall of Fame museum. We will walk back to Miley Hall for a class dinner. Later we will watch Newport's famous Fourth of July fireworks from a special viewing location.
On Monday morning, we will walk Newport's spectacular Cliff Walk before enjoying lunch at Easton's Beach (First Beach).
What's different from 2024?
We will go inside the mansions with Ross, rather than merely admiring them from the outside.
We will see Gilbert Stuart's full-length portrait of George Washington.
We will experience a historical reenactment of the reading of the Declaration of Independence.
We will reunite with a different mix of 8Y5 classmates.
We will enjoy a longer, four-day weekend in Newport.
