Community Responses: Supreme Court 2020 Decisions

September 17, 2020 - Join the Center for Justice and Law at our first Facebook Live event discussing this summer's rulings by the Supreme Court including major rulings on birth control, religion, indigenous land recognition, LGBTQ+ workplace protections, and DACA restoration. These rulings impact the architecture of social and health equity across our nation. In this event, we will bring in young community leaders, activists, and organizers to investigate the role of the Supreme Court in their work, activism, and lives. Community Health, Research, and Trauma: Perspectives from Young Black Scholars

October 30, 2021 - Join the Center for Justice and Law on Friday, October 30th from 12:00-2:30pm for an emerging conversation on the role of data and research in facilitating social change. This panel will feature young Black scholars who research at the intersection of trauma and community-based research. We will consider questions such as: how can data collection practices be harmful? How does this connect with experiences of generational trauma, grief, and exploitation of the most impacted communities? Journeys to Healing: Transforming Sexual Violence through Art

April 16, 2021 - In partnership with Hamline University's Women's Resource Center and Programming Board we are co-hosting “Journeys to Healing: Transforming Sexual Violence through Art” – an event during Sexual Assault Awareness Month on the experiences of survivors who use(d) art as a tool of healing and transformation. Please join us Friday, April 16th from 12:00pm-2:00pm CST for a virtual showcase featuring: a panel with the artists, small group discussions with the artists, and performances from the artists, and more.

Reproductive In(Justice): Birth Behind Bars 

April 30, 2021 - The Center for Justice and Law in partnership with the Ostara Initiative, the Minnesota Prison Doula Project, and the Alabama Birth Project presents our Spring conference Reproductive In(Justice): Birth Behind Bars featuring local and national advocates, community members, and leaders on Friday, April 30th 10:00am-2:30pm CST. Join us for an in-depth conversation centering the experiences of incarcerated people navigating pregnancy and birthing in prison. This four and a half hour event will include a series of panels, conversations, and a Keynote with cross-sector justice-impacted leaders, activists, scholars, and practitioners. Our final panel will highlight the advocacy efforts underway across Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Alabama to elevate awareness of legal and policy initiatives for reproductive justice. Colorism and Skin Lightening: Addressing an Epidemic of Mercury Poisoning in MN

December 3, 2021 - The Center for Justice and Law presents our virtual Fall conference Colorism and Skin Lightening: Addressing an Epidemic of Mercury Poisoning in MN featuring local, national, and international advocates, community members, and leaders on Friday, December 3rd 10:00am-2:00pm CST. Join us for an in-depth conversation around colorism, racism, and skin lightening that centers the experience of community members while addressing the skin lightening industry in MN and beyond. This four-hour event will include a series of panels, an International Keynote Speaker, and conversations with cross-sector leaders, advocates, scholars, and community members. Our first panel gives space for those with Im/migrant and Refugee backgrounds to discuss root causes of skin lightening such as colorism and structural racism. Our last panel will highlight the advocacy efforts underway in Minnesota and globally to elevate awareness on the present and future state of the Skin Lightening Industry. Prioritizing Belonging: Equity and Mental Health in Im/Migrant and Refugee Communities

May 6, 2022 - The Center for Justice and Law is excited to invite you to our virtual Spring conference Prioritizing Belonging: Equity and Mental Health in Im/Migrant and Refugee Communities featuring local and national advocates, community members, and leaders on Friday, May 6th 10:00am-2:00pm CST. Join the CJL for a transformative conversation on mental health in im/migrant and refugee communities. This four hour conference offers a series of panels including a Plenary Speaker, a Keynote Speaker, and conversations with cross-sector leaders, advocates, scholars, and community members. This conference aims to address the current mental health climate for im/migrant and refugees. We hope to identify structural and experiential obstacles communities face navigating their wellbeing journeys. In doing this we aim to empower individual and community stories while exposing systems that perpetuate inequities. Our first panel gives space for those with Im/migrant and Refugee backgrounds to discuss their experiences navigating mental health and wellness and our last panel will highlight the work of stakeholders, professionals and advocates in the mental health and wellness field both locally and nationally.
