What we will cover:
Reading: Main idea, theme, central ideas, making inferences, summarizing, analyzing characters, plot, setting, point of view, and using strong text evidence.
Vocabulary: Context clues, Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, synonyms and antonyms, figurative language, multiple-meaning words, and academic vocabulary.
Grammar & Language: Parts of speech, sentence structure, subjects and predicates, phrases and clauses, verb tenses, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, conjunctions, punctuation, capitalization, and common usage skills.
Writing: Narrative, informative, explanatory, and argumentative writing, along with written responses to literature and nonfiction texts.
Writing Skills: Developing strong ideas, organizing paragraphs, using supporting details and evidence, writing introductions and conclusions, revising, editing, and producing polished final pieces.
Literature: Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, and novel-based selections with a focus on character development, theme, author's purpose, plot, conflict, and literary elements.
Informational Text: Text structure, author's purpose and point of view, analyzing arguments, identifying claims and evidence, comparing texts, and evaluating information.
Reading Comprehension: Close reading, drawing conclusions, analyzing how details support ideas, comparing texts, and explaining thinking with evidence.
Speaking & Listening: Collaborative discussions, presentations, active listening, expressing ideas clearly, and responding thoughtfully to others.
