What we will cover this year:

• Reading: Finding the main idea and theme, making inferences, summarizing, identifying key details, analyzing characters, plot, setting, point of view, and using text evidence.

• Vocabulary: Context clues, prefixes and suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, synonyms and antonyms, multiple-meaning words, figurative language, and new academic vocabulary.

• Grammar & Language: Parts of speech, nouns, pronouns, verbs and verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, adjectives, adverbs, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, and commonly confused words.

• Writing: Narrative, opinion, and informative writing, along with responding to literature and supporting ideas with details and text evidence.

• Writing Skills: Planning, organizing, drafting, revising, editing, and creating polished final pieces.

• Literature: Fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and novel-based units with a focus on character, theme, plot, author's purpose, and making connections between texts.

• Reading Comprehension: Close reading, understanding text structure, comparing texts, drawing conclusions, and explaining thinking using evidence.

• Speaking & Listening: Class discussions, partner and group activities, presentations, and sharing ideas clearly and respectfully.
