Dear Parents,
We are having a fantastic first week of school at Mt. Vernon! Thank you for your support as we work through the new routines of the school year. Everyone is doing a great job!
If your child is a morning car rider, thank you for arriving early. We close the car rider lane at 7:45, and students who are not in their classroom at 7:50 or the end of morning announcements will be counted tardy. In order to unload and be in the classroom by 7:50, parents are encouraged to arrive to the Odum Smallwood entrance between 7:00 and 7:15. If you arrive to the car rider entrance after it is closed, you will need to take your child to the front office to check in where he/she will be counted tardy.
To pick up a student in the afternoon car rider line, you must have the student's current car rider tag. Dismissal begins at 2:20 and ends at 2:45. A total of 4 car rider tags are available to parent/guardians with photo ID between 8:00-1:30 and 2:45-3:30. Please see other car rider reminders below.
Our Jr. Trojans are already showing The Trojan Way each day! Our staff has been working hard to develop and grow relationships with our students during class, transitions and with lunch buddies in the cafeteria. Dr. Armour and I are excited to begin homeroom class visits next week.
Chromebooks are being checked out to students and will stay at school. In order to check out a Chromebook, Infinite Campus parent portal forms should be complete. At this time, we have over 300 incomplete parent portal forms. Thank you for completing back to school forms in the parent portal and others linked below if you have not already done so.
Students will take their beginning of the year MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessments next week. This assessment adjusts for students depending on their levels in language arts/reading and math. Teachers will introduce the assessment to students in an age-appropriate way. Growth reports will be shared with parents during the school year.
Thanks to our 2026-27 Partners in Education (listed below). Class t-shirt orders are due next Friday, August 21. Partners in Education will be listed on the back of these shirts.
Thank you for reading our school and classroom ParentSquare posts. Teachers are unable to read and respond to direct messages on ParentSquare. Please call the office, and use teacher/office email as described in our handbook for any daily updates/communication.
Go Trojans!

Reminders from HCSD Transportation Dept:
If you have not done so already, please download the My Ride K-12 app and look closely at your student’s bus number, time and stop location. The app can be downloaded for Apple iOS Download My Ride K-12 for Apple iOS devices and for Android devices Download My Ride K-12 for Android devices.
Nonresident students including HB251, Magnet and Tuition students, are not allowed to ride the bus to or from school unless it is a school day field trip experience. Nonresident families are required to provide transportation (car rider or MVES approved afternoon day care). Please contact the MVES front office with questions.
Car Rider Reminders
For morning drop-off, please have your student gather belongings, water bottle, etc. so he/she is prepared to exit the car quickly with all belongings READY when your car arrives at the sidewalk for drop-off.
Please remain in your car when unloading AND loading students. If you need to buckle students into car seats, please pull into the spaces next to the hill after you exit the loading area.
Please have students load/unload from the PASSENGER SIDE if possible. This saves time and is safer than having students cross between cars.
Please pull up as far as possible in the car rider line. The unloading/loading area is the entire length of the sidewalk.
A current car rider tag is required for pick up in the car rider line.
Our campus (including the car rider line) is a drug free/tobacco free campus.
It is unsafe for children to hang out of car windows or stand up through the sun roof while in line.
Just a reminder that Spirit Wear orders will end this Friday, August 14 at noon, so be sure to get your order for all designs (including sweatshirts) and sizes (including adult sizing) in before it's too late. Go Trojans!

INFINITE CAMPUS PARENT PORTAL REQUIRED FORMS
When parents log into Infinite Campus Parent Portal for the first time this year, parents will be prompted by a pop-up message to complete an Annual Census Update before accessing your student's information, including forms, and viewing class schedules when published by your child's school.
Parents will need to confirm or update household, emergency contact, and student information, this includes all Health information for your child. For security purposes parents will need to upload a copy of their ID for each child. The process can be completed on any device; however, it is recommended that the process be completed on a mobile phone to make uploading of parent ID easier. Any parent without a device can complete the task at your child's school.
Once the Annual Census Update has been filled out, parents will need to complete one form that includes below information:
Compulsory Education Notification
Student Services Program Acknowledgment
Code of Conduct
Student Device Acceptable Use and Checkout Agreement
Student School Agendas and Planning Guides
Participation in Clubs and Organizations (Middle and High School only)
Digital Citizenship Program
Book Notification
Digital Media Release
Student Health Updates
All 6th & 8th grade parents will also receive a Scoliosis form that will be listed separately.
Forms will be available in Parent Portal on the following dates/times:
Elementary Schools - July 6th at 4:00 p.m.
Middle Schools - July 7th at 4:00 p.m.
High Schools - July 8th at 4:00 p.m.
If you have any questions or need any help accessing your Parent Portal, please contact our front office.
