If your child needs to see a therapist for ongoing counseling, the first step is to obtain a list of counselors who are “in network” for your insurance company. Most health insurance companies provide a phone number on the back of their membership card that connects the consumer to their “Behavioral Health” or “Mental Health” providers.
If your child is covered by Medicaid or similar insurance companies such as Amerigroup or WellCare, there are school-based counselors that work with the Project Aware program who can see the child for counseling sessions at school. Our county offers school-based counseling for Spanish-speaking students and their families as well. When the Project Aware counselor works with students at school, families must still schedule an initial intake appointment and also schedule appointments with the psychiatrist if needed through the office too. Those appointments are not school-based. Before a student can begin working with the Project Aware counselor, a consent form must be signed and submitted. Forms are provided by the school counselor in both English and Spanish.
