Welcome to my Science class!
My goal is to create a safe, engaging, and student-centered learning environment where every student feels encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and take ownership of their learning. I believe that science should be both meaningful and fun—and I’m here to guide students every step of the way.
How I Manage My Science Class
In our classroom, we follow a clear structure and set of expectations that help students stay focused, respectful, and responsible. I begin each lesson with a daily “Do Now” activity to get students thinking and ready to learn. Lessons are designed to be interactive, using a mix of direct instruction, group work, labs, and discussions to meet different learning styles.
Classroom routines are consistent, and students know what to expect each day. I use formative assessments, checkpoints, and reflection activities to track student progress and guide my instruction. I also incorporate technology and real-world examples to keep learning relevant and connected to students’ lives.
I believe strong communication is key to student success. That’s why I make it a point to build relationships with both students and families. I’m always open to partnering with parents to ensure students are supported both inside and outside the classroom. Together, we can help them reach their full potential.
Shared Accountability
As a student in this science class, you are expected to uphold the values, expectations, and policies outlined in the 2025-2026 HECHS student handbook. Your actions and choices directly impact not only your own learning experience but also the learning environment for your classmates. In this class, we share responsibility for creating a positive and productive classroom, and while I am here to support you, you must hold yourself to a high standard. Together, we will foster an environment of respect, responsibility, and growth.
You are expected to:
Respect: Demonstrate respect for yourself and others by following classroom norms, valuing diverse perspectives, and communicating thoughtfully.
Responsibility: Attend class regularly, arrive on time, and come prepared with necessary materials for each lesson.
Active Participation: Engage fully in class discussions, labs, and activities, and contribute positively to the learning environment.
Timeliness: Complete all assignments and assessments on time, take responsibility for your learning, and ask for help when needed.
Safety: Follow all safety rules during laboratory activities to ensure the well-being of yourself and your classmates.
Classroom Culture: Contribute to a positive and collaborative classroom environment by adhering to the policies outlined in the student handbook.
Any violations of these expectations will be addressed according to the following progression:
In both Earth & Environmental Science and Biology, we follow the grading guidelines set by the Halifax County School District to ensure consistency and fairness in evaluating student progress.
Student performance is measured through a variety of assessments that reflect effort, understanding, and skill development across different areas. Each component of a student’s grade is weighted as follows:
Tests – 25%
Class Work – 35%
Homework – 10%
Quizzes – 10%
Projects – 20%
This breakdown emphasizes the importance of consistent participation, completion of assignments, and demonstration of understanding through both formal assessments and hands-on activities. Students are encouraged to stay organized, complete all work on time, and take advantage of opportunities for feedback and improvement.
I believe in supporting every learner’s growth, and I’m happy to work with students and parents to help everyone succeed!
