The “Bill of Rights” for Room 422
RESPECT: You must first respect your own being before you can respect anyone or anything else. This means that you will take pride in your work and stand by your word. Be respectful to ALL. Teachers are here to help and support you with learning about your subjects and about life. If you respect yourself, respecting other people around you (your peers) will not be a problem. When you respect other people’s opinions, thoughts, and beliefs, they will in turn show you the same respect back. You have to have it and show it to receive it.
Class Signal: When I want the attention of the class, I will clap “3” times. After the third clap, everyone is to stop whatever he/she is doing and look at me for further instructions.
Failure to comply with this class signal will result in the following consequences:
First offense: Warning
Second offense: Loss of class privileges
Third offense: Isolated or Silent Lunch as a class
Class arrival and dismissal: Be ready for class each day on time and with proper materials. You must be seated with pencils sharpened, paper, notebooks, journals, and any other necessary materials by the time the tardy bell rings and the room door is shut. Everyone should be ready to start class on time each day. You will be given an assigned seat and must remain seated the entire class period unless moved by the teacher. As you enter the classroom please greet the teacher.
Speaking/Movement: Raise your hand to get permission before speaking or moving around in the classroom. If you need to sharpen your pencil during class, you must raise your hand and ask for permission. Only one person at a time is allowed at the sharpener. While it is expected that everyone brings his/her own pencils, you may borrow one from the teacher. NOTE: It must be returned at the end of the period.
School/Classroom Property: Do not vandalize school/classroom property by writing on desks/walls/boards or damaging computers/lockers/or any other equipment.
Class Time: Every minute of class time is important and cannot be wasted. All students are given adequate bathroom breaks during the day. Take advantage of these opportunities and use the restrooms at the appropriate times. During class, students will be allowed to go to the restroom only in extreme emergencies. Students must have the teacher’s permission to leave.
Lunch: As it is expected of all classes, you will go to lunch and act like young ladies and gentlemen. You will line up when instructed to do so and walk in a single file line on the right side of the hall with no talking. While in the lunch line and while at the lunch table, students will be expected to use their inside (low whisper) voices and refrain from horseplay. All students will remain seated until it is time to line up to return to class. There should not be any visitors at the lunch table from other classes. Students are to put all trash in the designated trash cans. No food or drink should leave the cafeteria.
Class Participation: All students are expected to participate in all class activities and follow Ms. Mahoney’s instructions. Everyone in class starts off with 5 participation points per nine weeks. When a student repeatedly does not follow rules and procedures or does not participate in required activities, points will be deducted.
Group Work: There will be times when the class will work in groups on various assignments and activities. It is the expectation that all students will participate in any group work. You are to work quietly in your group, keeping your voices down and staying focused on the task given. After group activities are completed, each group member is responsible for cleaning up the group’s area.
Note: The teacher will assign ALL students to a group. No student will be allowed to select their own group members.
Assignments: Students are expected to complete all assignments by the due dates. Homework will be given and should be handed to the teacher prior to entering the class, unless otherwise instructed. Late homework will be accepted with a deduction of 10 points for every day that it is late with a maximum of 3 days. Classwork is due during class unless otherwise instructed by Ms. Mahoney. Note: Cheating will not be tolerated in this class. Making mistakes and getting things wrong are a part of the learning process, and we are all here to learn. Cheating will be dealt with according to the school and district policy as outlined in the Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
When any of these rules/procedures are not followed, the following consequences will be enforced:
1st offense: Warning
2nd offense: Time-out (10 minutes) and/or parent contact
3rd offense: Parent conference and referral to administration
I wish all of you a successful 2025-2026 school year. If at any time you need to talk with someone, please do not hesitate to come to me. I am here to support and help you.
