Welcome to Probability & Statistics!
This class works with numbers but in a different way than you are used to in other math classes. We work through real life scenarios as we introduce different topics, there is not always one correct answer to each problem, and there are often multiple ways to draw possible conclusions. It is a different way of thinking about math.
Part of this course is learning to become good consumers of data; we will read some articles that contain statistics and learn to come to our own conclusions instead of blindly agreeing with the conclusions that are drawn by the authors. We will have at least one graded discussion about studies that have been done and the conclusions that were drawn.
The first half of the year we learn about statistics: different kinds of data and how to visualize the data in a meaningful way, how to think about surveys and the data that comes from them, and how to analyze and present data. We will be doing small projects along the way, using data from real life examples to practice the methods that we learn. The second half of the year focuses more on probability: theoretical probability, empirical probability, the probability in different games that we play, etc.
