Sidney Poitier became the first African-American to win an Academy Award in the category Best Actor in a Leading Role for Lilies of the Field.
This was the first Oscar for a Black actor in a leading role as, prior to this, Hattie McDaniel won an Academy award for Best Supporting Actress.
Signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 2, 1964, the act prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It provided for the integration of schools and other public facilities in addition to making employment discrimination illegal.
