Flipster: New Summer Reading option from the Library
If you love reading glossy magazines but end up misplacing your copy or spilling coffee on it, Flipster is for you. Flipster is where HACC patrons can page through The Atlantic, Prevention, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, and Writer's Digest in full color.
You can download the Flipster app on your preferred device, log in with your HACC credentials and enjoy reading articles about Ed Sheeran and Gisele Bündchen. Or learn about foods that heal adult autism in a recent issue of Prevention. You can savor a long read from The Atlantic and then figure out how to get your work published with help from Writer's Digest.
Learn more on Ebsco's Flipster Libguide or check it out for yourself on the Flipster homepage (be sure to log in to myHACC first).

Are you excited to share your story and what you have learned? Would you like to do all of this and develop your leadership skills, make new friends, and get involved with the HACC community?
Learn why HAWKGuide and recent HACC graduate, McKenzie Hall, loved working with the NSO team:
“Being a student worker for the New Student Orientation team has helped me build interpersonal skills and leadership qualities. The greatest gift I received from the NSO team was their amazing support and encouragement throughout my educational journey. The flexibility of the job made it easy to find the balance between work life and school life. It was a pleasure meeting and working with Nakia, Ayelet, and Jenny as well as the other departments here at HACC, and the students that I had the opportunity to mentor.”

Did you know that it’s completely normal to enter college and not be 100% sure of your major or career choices? Now is a great time to start exploring! According to research, about 80% of students change their major at least once during their college career. Those who change their major at least once are also more likely to graduate college. Many factors influence our career choices. Just a few to consider: Personality- who are you? What are your personality traits? Skills: What are your good at? What classes do you do well in? Values: What is important to you? Interests: What subjects do you enjoy? What do you enjoy doing in your free time? You may not be able to answer all these questions yet, and some of these may change over time. No wonder choosing a major can be so difficult!!!

6 Tips for the Undecided Student
Below are some tips on finding the major that is the best fit for you:

Plan to attend the Zoom Career Services summer 2023 workshops. This summer is a great time to start exploring and get on the right path. Attend a workshop and learn about the various factors to explore to find the right major for you. An interactive activity will help you get started with the process. For the workshop Zoom link and to check out all the events being offered this summer, click here.
Enroll in FS 101, Career Development and Decision-Making Course this fall 2023. Spend a semester investing in yourself and your career! FS 101 is a 3-credit elective. In this course, you will spend the semester exploring and learning about yourself, and the career decision-making process. You will explore and develop your own educational and career goals.
Network and Utilize Your Supports. Do you have friends or family members in your chosen career field? Or do you know somebody who knows somebody? If so, they are a valuable resource to connect with! Schedule an “Informational Interview” to learn more about their career. Write down all the questions that you have about their career and schedule a time to meet with them. Your Instructors here at HACC are also experts in their field! Don’t be afraid to ask them questions. We also have connections with many professionals who are willing to serve as mentors to our students for “Informational Interviews,” as well as assist in other ways. Reach out to our career services team to learn more.
Give it a Test Drive! Job Shadowing, Volunteering, Internships or Part-time jobs are all great ways to experience and learn about careers. By volunteering, interning or working a job in your field you will gain valuable experience and discover it is the right career for you. There are many other benefits as well. Not only do these experiences look great on your resume, you will build a network of professionals in the field and it may even lead to future employment. Please review the information here, regarding these experiential learning opportunities.
Don’t get Discouraged! Maybe you thought you had an idea but changed your mind, that’s OK. Learning what you do not like is just as valuable as what you do like. Career development is a life-long process, and these decisions do not happen overnight. Throughout life you will grow and change, situations change and your career decisions may change as well. You do not need to have it all figured out just yet… Finding a major that suits all your interests is a great start!
Be loud and #HACCproud!
