Accreditation
HACC is an accredited institution and a member of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE or the Commission), www.msche.org. HACC’s accreditation status is “accreditation reaffirmed” as posted on the institution’s Statement of Accreditation Status (SAS). The Commission’s most recent action on the institution’s accreditation status on June 21, 2018 was to reaffirm accreditation. MSCHE is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education to conduct accreditation and pre-accreditation (candidate status) activities for institutions of higher education including distance, correspondence education, and direct assessment programs offered at those institutions. The Commission’s geographic area of accrediting activities is throughout the United States.

History
Harrisburg Area Community College was established February 14, 1964, as the first community college in Pennsylvania. HACC welcomed its first class of 426 students on September 21 of the same year. HACC has become the largest community college in Pennsylvania, with approximately 12,000 students enrolled.
Over the past decades, HACC has grown from the Harrisburg Wildwood Campus to include campuses at Gettysburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, York and Midtown location to house the College’s technology and trade programs. At Midtown, the Community Center for Technology and the Arts offers classes for Adult Basic Education/General Educational Development (GED) preparation and English as a Second Language (ESL). HACC now has approximately 105 associate degree, certificate and diploma programs with classes both in-person and asynchronous (virtual) opportunities.
HACC's Office of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development offers professional development, job training, and personal enrichment courses/programs designed for both individuals and corporations. The College is one of the largest providers of workforce training in the state serving over 460 companies with about 10,000 enrollments in the areas of public safety, job skills, healthcare, technology and trades training, and computer skills.

HACC’s workforce development unit within the Office of Academic Affairs and Workforce Development conducts a variety of lifelong learning and continuing education classes as well as industry-driven training courses/programs designed to increase employee productivity and organizational efficiency. Some courses/programs are offered directly to the public, while contract and customized training are offered to employers.
Workforce training gives working professionals a competitive edge in their careers and provides companies with an excellent training opportunity for their employees. Select trainings may be offered at HACC’s campus locations, at a company’s location or online. Please note: All courses/programs may not be currently offered. Automotive Technology courses inform novice and skilled automotive technicians of the regulations, procedures and requirements pertaining to Pennsylvania’s safety inspection of vehicles. Students have the opportunity to demonstrate hands-on tactile skills and complete the requirements to become PA Vehicle Safety Inspection and Enhanced Emissions Inspector Certification certified. Career Readiness programming delivers essential job readiness skills through the STEP Academy, as well as offers workforce skills assessments, as a local provider of the National Career Readiness Certificate (WorkKeys assessment). Please call 717-780-2577 for more information.
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training prepares students for a career in the high-demand trucking industry. Courses include Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) in both Class A and Class B, refresher/upgrade classes and personalized training as well as customized training for individual and company drivers. The CDL program is a licensed third-party testing site for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and testing is available by appointment only. For more information, email cdl@hacc.edu.
Computer and IT Training provides customized and public enrollment computer training in a comprehensive assortment of Microsoft Office Suite software applications such as Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. Certification training is also available for CompTIA A+, Network+, and Security+. For more information, email corptrain@hacc.edu.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) training is available for HACC’s entire service region. Certification courses are: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), Paramedic (NRP) and Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN). Along with in-class instruction, the EMS training provides a full-time educational opportunity for those interested in beginning a career in this field. All offerings prepare students to become eligible for the PA Department of Health certification and National Registry exams. Finally, as an American Heart Association Community Training Center, HACC offers various certifications in First Aid and CPR/AED for both the public and for Healthcare Professionals in addition to Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes allow non-native speakers of English to improve their language skills in the community, college, and career settings. In the Fire Training department, HACC’s Career Fire Academy is designed to prepare cadets for a career in the fire service. The Academy offers structured training in firefighting, emergency, hazardous materials and rescue. Participants test for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician and Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations level certifications throughout the course of the Academy. Academy graduates may be awarded college credit applicable to HACC’s Fire Science Technology AAS degree.
In addition to the Fire Academy, HACC also offers a wide assortment of education and training designed to recruit and prepare individuals for volunteer or career positions within fire departments across the Commonwealth. HACC continues to be a valued partner to many businesses and industries throughout the region, providing customized fire, rescue and hazardous materials training to those who may be expected to respond while in the workplace. The Firing Range at the Piccola Law Enforcement Complex is utilized for a wide range of law enforcement training programs. This indoor range is also rented to private, local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Email policetrng@hacc.edu for more information.
Forklift training is offered as an introductory or recertification course, which consists of virtual self-paced training followed by hands-on instruction. New and experienced Forklift Operators will gain the knowledge and fundamentals needed to achieve certification in a high-demand occupation. Email cdl@hacc.edu for more information.
Healthcare Education and Training provides an ever-expanding variety of workforce development programs and courses including Certified Recovery Specialist/Certified Family Recovery Specialist, Massage Therapist, Medical Assistant/CCMA, Medical Coding Specialist, Nurse Aide, Nursing Home Administrator, Personal Trainer, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy Technician, Physician Office Assistant and Reflexology. These comprehensive programs and courses prepare students to enter healthcare careers. Continuing education offerings help current healthcare professionals meet their continuing education requirements. Many of the entry-level courses prepare students to sit for professionally-recognized certification exams.

Industrial Safety and Quality courses provide training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplaces in general industry. OSHA-10 and -30 classes for general industry are available. Training on other safety issues including Lockout/Tagout are also available in English and Spanish. Law Enforcement training programs and courses meet the needs of current law enforcement professionals as well as those seeking to enter the law enforcement field. The Municipal Police Academy is authorized to provide the Act 120 certification required for all new and prospective municipal police officers as well as mandated and elective continuing education for active police officers. The Police Academy accepts pre-service cadets. Those who complete the Police Academy can also obtain college credits for their work when transferring into HACC’s Criminal Justice AA or Police Science AAS degrees. HACC provides continuing education for county probation and parole officers across the Commonwealth. Manufacturing Technology offers a variety of courses including Computer Numeric Control (CNC) technology and welding. For more information email corptrain@hacc.edu.
Medical Cannabis certifications can be completed online in 9 weeks as a cannabis cultivation specialist, cannabis retail specialist, or cannabis extraction and product development specialist. Certification completers also receive a digital badge through the Credly global credentialing network and access to the Careers in Cannabis employment network. The Department of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) provides public safety services to the HACC community. Our goal is to serve with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism.
What does DPSS do?
Provides continuous patrol of HACC campuses by foot, bicycle, and marked and unmarked vehicles.
Controls access to campus buildings.
Inspects Campus property for safety deficiencies.
Responds to and provides assistance during emergency situations.
Maintains Lost and Found services.
Provides Escort Services.
Provides lock-out and jump-start vehicle services.
What should I do if I witnessed criminal activity on HACC property?
Immediately report any criminal activity you witness on HACC property to the appropriate campus Public Safety and Security Office.
Report the activity to the appropriate police agency for your campus location.

How does the DPSS issue alert notices?
DPSS issues alert notices when we become aware of a potential safety and/or security risk to HACC community. These risks may be on college property or within our immediate vicinity. DPSS will also advise local and state police agencies of potential risks.
