Autumn Term - Rights of a Child
We will explore important issues concerning human rights. We will start with looking at the Rights of a Child and discuss a child's right to education. We will look at extracts from Jane Eyre and Holes. We will then read about a slave girl teaching herself to read in secret, and write creatively continuing a story from an extract. We learn about child labour today working in cobalt mines through Amnesty international leaflets, and then create our own leaflet to raise awareness of fast fashion and sweat shops. We will discuss whether we should boycott fast fashion in groups. We will also explore etymology, the study of where words come from.
Spring Term - Oliver Twist and Poetry
We will dive into Charles Dickens' famous novel, Oliver Twist, which tells the story of a boy who joins a criminal gang of pickpockets lead by the infamous Fagin. Dickens uses humour and irony to mock those in power who do nothing to help the poor. We will then look at Marcus Rashford's campaign for free school meals, analysing persuasive language, and discuss whether this is a good idea.
Summer Term - Story writing
We will read extracts and short stories in order to plan and write our own original story, either through the route of mythology, studying Beowulf, the first literature written in the English language, or through science fiction, looking at War of the Worlds. We will create an interactive branching story online so we can share it with our friends.
