Dyed some fabrics today! The color I wanted to purchase for my pants was out of stock, so I decided to use this as an opportunity to get some practice with dyeing fabrics!
I started off with a small pot, some hot water, and the RIT dyes Golden Yellow and Lemon Yellow. I tinkered with the ratios until I reached the color I desired. Once I had my ratios perfected I moved over to the larger dye bath where I dyed the fabric. I'm using a silk organza so it took the dye beautifully, hardly any dye came out in the rinse cycle. I let the organza air dry and ironed it.
I also dyed a white pair of Converse shoes to be the light teal blue accent color that is present across the costume. These were a little trickier because I couldn't swatch the fabric on the converse, but I used a cotton scrap to help approximate the color. I followed the same steps as I did for the organza using RIT Dye Teal and Royal Blue.Â
I also have a slightly adjacent update on the black button down. I purchased one used off Facebook Marketplace (I'm doing my best to be somewhat environmentally conscious) and immediately ripped the arms off. I took off the wooden buttons and replaced it with teal buttons I found at the Innovation Center and some yellow thread (the devil is in the details). Next I'll construct the large sleeves and attach them to the button down.
My final update (for now) is on my antennae! I recieved large black and white pipe cleaners in the mail and twisted them together to create a black and white striping effect. This took a bit of tinkering to get a version I was happy with but I am so excited about my freaky little antennae. Next, I need to finish the headpiece, make some sparkly pom poms, and attach it all together!
