We are pleased to be able to offer a range of grants for independent travel. Below are details of the three travel awards we are able to offer. Applications can be made to more than one award but a separate application must be made for each detailing why the trip meets the specific criteria of the award.
Please note that Travel Awards are designed to support pupils when travelling on their own initiative and are therefore not tenable in respect of school-organised trips.
The Murray Awards: Language Development
These awards allow pupils to travel abroad to develop their language skills, either in a language that they are already studying, or in one they would like to learn. Projects include attending language courses, staying with families, attending courses (mountaineering, sailing, painting, photography) in the foreign language, working holidays etc.
Last year, an S6 pupil received a Murray Award to help fund his trip to Japan to increase his exposure to Japanese culture and language to increase his fluency.
Another S6 pupil received a Murray Award to help towards an Interrailing trip around Europe which included spending time attending art and baking courses in France.
The Sir Roger Young Memorial Award: Pre-university international study, travel, training or personal development
The Sir Roger Young Memorial Award was launched in 2019 in memory of Sir Roger Young (1923-2017). Sir Roger was Headmaster of George Watson’s Boys’ College between 1958 and 1976 and subsequently Principal of George Watson’s College until 1985.
The Award is available to pupils in S5 and S6 and, exceptionally, to Former Pupils within one year of leaving the school.
It has a value of at least £1,000 which may be doubled where the recipient is, or has been, in receipt of a Foundation Place at George Watson’s College or where there is some other financial need or hardship.
The Award must be used to facilitate international travel for pre-university study, training or personal development, not necessarily as part of a formal course of instruction.
The Sanson and Women Watsonian Centenary Awards: Adventurous Travel
These are awarded to pupils primarily for an activity which involves service, initiative and adventure. This can be at home or abroad. There are a number of awards available of varying amounts to assist with travel.
In recent years, awards have been allocated to students for:
A gap year project volunteering at a school in Malawi
A two week wildlife volunteering placement in Thailand
A five week expedition to Madagascar with the Scouts.
You could even apply for a summer course with Outward Bound - https://www.outwardbound.org.uk/courses
The Bulkeley-Evans HMC Scholarship
Between 25 to 30 scholarships of £200–£800 are available to support Gap Year projects. In addition, one or two scholarships of £1000 may be awarded to candidates whose financial needs are such that a gap year project would be impossible without such an award.
Please note this is an external scholarship and so has separate deadlines to the above awards.
