ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT

Hello students, are you ready for the material?

Today, we’re going to learn about Analytical Exposition Text.

An analytical exposition is a type of spoken or written text that is intended to persuade the listeners or readers that something is the case.

To make the persuasion stronger, the speaker or writer gives some arguments as the fundamental reasons why something is the case. This type of text can be found in scientific books, journals, magazines, newspaper articles, academic speech or lectures, research report etc.

Analytical expositions are popular among science, academic community and educated people. The generic structure of analytical exposition usually has three components: (1) Thesis, (2) Arguments and (3) Reiteration or conclusion.

A. Generic Structure of Analytical Exposition

1. Thesis : Introduces the topic and shows speaker or writer’s position; Outlines of the arguments are presented.

2. Arguments : It consists about Point and Elaboration. Point, states the main argument. Elaboration, develops and supports each point of argument

3. Conclusion : Reiteration (restatement), restates speaker or writer’s position

B. Generic Features

1. An analytical exposition focuses on generic human and non human participants.

2. It uses mental processes. It is used to state what the writer or speaker thinks or feels about something. For example: realize, feel etc.

3. It uses emotive and evaluative words

4. It often needs material processes. It is used to state what happens, e.g. ….has polluted… etc.

5. It usually uses Simple Present Tense and Present Perfect Tense.

6. Enumeration is sometimes necessary to show the list of given arguments: Firstly, secondly …, Finally, etc

Controlling Children Using Computer

Computer and internet are useful as well as powerful. Information about health and safe usage of computer and Internet, especially for children, should be owned by each family. Computer connected to internet is powerful way to socialize with others. It can be good but also bad effect. Recently we hear a lot of children get the advantage of social networking sites but we often see the news about the disadvantage of it for children. Healthy and safety of computer and Internet usage should continue to be campaigned.

The role of parent in assisting and directing children in using computer is very necessary. Installation of software monitor such as key logger which has function to watch and note all activities relating to keyboard usage is helpful but not enough to protect children from potential harms. Children tend to hide what they have done in front of the computer to their parent. They see that all of they have done are their privacy and no one may know.

We can not prevent children from using computer because it is multifunctional. However, many parents worry about what their kids do in front of the computer; whether they are doing homework or even just playing games. Or spending all time to surf internet which is the materials do not fit with his age. There is a tendency, especially teenagers, want to become acquainted with many strangers out side. The lack parental supervision of children’s activities is likely to pose a potential danger to them. So parental monitor against the use of computers needs to be done from time to time.

Analytical Exposition is a text that elaborates the writer‘s idea about the phenomenon surrounding. Its social function is to persuade the reader that the idea is important matter, and to analyze the topic that the thesis/opinion is correct by developing an argument to support it.

Purpose of Analytical Exposition Text
– To convince the reader that the topics presented was an important topic to be discussed or gained attention by way of providing arguments or opinions that support the main idea or topic.

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Analytical Exposition Text:
– Using relational process
– Using internal conjunction
– Using causal conjunction
– Using Simple Present Tense
– Using compound and complex sentence.
– Use word that link argument, such as firstly, secondly, and reasoning through causal conjunction, such as in addition, furthermore, however, therefore.

Part 2 Example 

1 Cars should be banned in the city

Cars should be banned in the city. As we all know, cars create pollution, and cause a lot of road deaths and other accidents.

Firstly, cars, as we all know, contribute to most of the pollution in the world. Cars emit a deadly gas that causes illnesses such as bronchitis, lung cancer, and ‘triggers’ of asthma. Some of these illnesses are so bad that people can die from them.

Secondly, the city is very busy. Pedestrians wander everywhere and cars commonly hit pedestrians in the city, which causes them to die. Cars today are our roads biggest killers.

Thirdly, cars are very noisy. If you live in the city, you may find it hard to sleep at night, or concentrate on your homework, and especially talk to someone.

In conclusion, cars should be banned from the city for the reasons listed.

2 Is Smoking Good for Us?

Before we are going to smoke, it is better to look at the fact. About 50 thousands people die every year in Britain as direct result of smoking. This is seven times as many as die in road accidents. Nearly a quarter of smokers die because of diseases caused by smoking.

Ninety percent of lung cancers are caused by smoking. If we smoke five cigarettes a day, we are six times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non smoker. If we smoke twenty cigarettes a day, the risk is nineteen greater. Ninety five percent of people who suffer of bronchitis are people who are smoking. Smokers are two and half times more likely to die of heart disease than non smokers.

Additionally, children of smoker are more likely to develop bronchitis and pneumonia. In one hour in smoky room, non smoker breathes as much as substance causing cancer as if he had smoked fifteen cigarettes.

Smoking is really good for tobacco companies because they do make much money from smoking habit. Smoking however is not good for every body else.

4.Why is It Important to Choose the Accredited School?

Most of teenagers need to go to school and there are a lot of schools over there. Nowadays, schools grow to offer plenty of choice; private and state ones. However it is a hard choice since there are many factors which need to be considered before making the selection. Some will be influenced by friends; because some friend got to certain school than we go to there too. Some prefer to choose certain school because of the closer distance. In fact, the primary decisive matter for selecting school is whether the school has been accredited or not.

Why is important to choose an accredited school? Well, accredited schools have an edge over the unaccredited schools. This label of Accredited School has an impact in employment opportunities. As result, if there are two or more students with similar qualifications, the student who comes from the accredited school will have an edge over the other candidate. Student from an accredited school has more open door than student with an accredited one.

Many students select certain school depending more on short term factors like friend influence and short distance from home. It is not bad since commuting actually needs much cost. Choosing school which is closer to home will save time, energy and money. However if that school is not accredited, the time and money spent along studying seems to be waste in the long term because it could become a limiting factor in gaining future opportunities.

Accredited school is not the only factor which will drive student’s success. Personality and characterization are very important too. However a student with good personality who comes from an accredited school is better than the others.

5. The Impact of Social Media on Society

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, transforming the way we communicate and interact. While it offers many benefits, it is important to critically examine the impact of social media on society and consider both its positive and negative aspects.

Argumentation

Firstly, social media enhances connectivity and communication. It allows people to connect with friends, family, and communities regardless of geographical boundaries. It provides a platform for sharing ideas, information, and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and promoting cultural exchange. It has revolutionized activism and social movements, empowering individuals to raise awareness and create social change.

Secondly, social media has a significant impact on mental health. Excessive use of social media has been linked to increased feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. The constant exposure to carefully curated images and unrealistic portrayals can lead to low self-esteem and body image issues, especially among young people. Argumentation

Renewable energy sources are environmentally friendly. Unlike fossil fuels, they produce minimal greenhouse gas emissions, reducing the impact of climate change and air pollution. They help to mitigate global warming and decrease our dependence on finite fossil fuel reserves, promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Renewable energy sources are abundant and inexhaustible. The sun, wind, and water are natural resources that can be harnessed to generate clean energy. Unlike fossil fuels, which are finite and subject to depletion, renewable energy sources provide a long-term and sustainable solution to meet our energy needs.

7. Learning English through Music

Thesis

Learning English through music and songs can be very enjoyable. You can mix pleasure with learning when you listen to a song and exploit the song as a means to your English progress. Some underlying reason can be drawn to support the idea why we use songs in language learning.

Argumentation

Firstly, "the song stuck in my head" Phenomenon (the echoing in our minds of the last song we heard after leaving a restaurant, shopping malls, etc) can be both enjoyable and sometimes unnerving. This phenomenon also seems to reinforce the idea that songs work on our short-and-long term memory.

Secondly, songs in general also use simple conversational language, with a lot of repetition, which is just what many learners look for sample text. The fact that they are effective makes them many times more motivating than other text. Although usually simple, some songs can be quite complex syntactically, lexically and poetically, and can be analyzed in the same way as any other literary sample.

Furthermore, song can be appropriated by listener for their own purpose. Most pop songs and probably many other types don't have precise people, place or time reference.

In addition, songs are relaxing. They provide variety and fun, and encourage harmony within oneself and within one group. Little wonder they are important tools in sustaining culture, religion, patriotism and yeas, even revolution.

8. Trash Management

Thesis

Management of trash is very important in Indonesia. As one of the countries with big amount of trash from many sectors, proper management is necessary.

Argumentation

Firstly, it is important to provide healthy environment. When the trash is not managed well, it will create area where bacteria can live.

Moreover, it can cause some health issues, and breathing issues become one of them that can be caused by bed smell of the trash.

Furthermore, bad management of trash can lead to flood. When it is not managed well, trash can block the flow of water. As the result, water debit can increase during the rainy season and the channels of water cannot deliver the water well.

Conclusion

That is why it is very important to manage the trash and it is better to promote the recycling process.

9. Homeschooling

Thesis:

I believe that the homeschooling system is not the best education system. However, many parents believe that no other education systems are better than homeschooling.

But I think this education system won’t wrap the entire learning aspects that usually are reached by formal schools, like the socialization, learning process, and kids’ self-development.

Arguments:

Learning process given by the school is about how to understand the content or material of every single subject. It is also about how to experience what happens in the surroundings directly.

Homeschooling students will only decide which pace that they really want the most and which subject they will learn deeper than the other subjects.

Also, homeschooling students will only socialize with family and people around them. Those students won’t encounter anything bad and they won’t learn how to react to something bad around them.

Finally, the homeschooling program with one to one learning won’t guarantee that the students have an excellent development to face the real future.

Those students won’t know how to control the problem and face any problem. They are all surrounded by good things and safety provided by the parents and family.

Conclusion:

The homeschooling educational system won’t make the students successfully educated. This new educational system is like a controller for the development of the students.

It shows us that homeschooling is not the option to educate or teach kids.

10 Beakfast

Thesis:

In a super busy morning, many people tend to leave the house without getting their breakfast. This is bad since breakfast brings a lot of benefits. Below are the most important reasons to have breakfast.

Arguments:

Having breakfast is going to help you feel more focused throughout the day. When you study at school without having breakfast before, you will lose your focus during the lesson.

Breakfast is like fuel that will keep you ready and active until lunchtime. Besides, breakfast will also give your brains the entire essential energy in order to focus and function better on your tasks.

Having breakfast is also going to help you control your appetite. By skipping your breakfast, you will end up snacking throughout the day until lunchtime. Do you need those extra calories?

Conclusion:

Based on the details above, breakfast will help you be more focused. Having breakfast will also keep you healthier since it will help you control your appetite.

11 Sports

Thesis:

Children all around the world are getting fatter and fatter. The lifestyle adopted by those kids makes this trend worse. How can you help them become healthier?

There is no better way to help those kids than involving them in sports.

Arguments:

Sports will keep your kids active, strong, healthy, and fit. Kids’ bodies need daily exercise every single day. Scientists have shown that kids who play some sports have better health than those who don’t.

There are so many types of sports that your kids can choose. Netball and soccer can be the best option for winter. And for summer, cricket and softball are the best ideas.

You can also help your kids to enjoy some other sports like basketball, tennis, and gymnastics all year round. No matter where you live or what you like, there is always sport for everyone.

Sports will also help your kids to make new friends. They need friends to do some sports. By meeting their friends, your kids will be able to learn how to conduct teamwork and trust each other.

Your kids will be healthier and will love sports if you introduce them to fun sports in their early ages. Sports will also bring them some new friends and learn many things.

12 Fast Food

In this practical era, people in a city tend to consume fast food. Some of them have no time to cook or make their own meals. Besides its efficiency, fast food is considered to be more delicious and prestigious than traditional food such as ketoprak, pecel or gado-gado However, many experts consider that fast food is not good for our health.

In the 1940's, fast food found popularity in the United States Fast food restaurants spread rapidly within a few years Oddly, obesity and cancer started to rise at the same time.

Arguments:

Fast food contains so many additives. To ensure low-costs, they are made with highly processed ingredients to give extended life, to maintain consistency, and to make it more delicious, the original healthy form has to be altered.

Calories in fast food do not damage health, but chemical additives do such as monosodium glutamate and aspartame. Studies show that fast food contains chemical additives. Thus, there is absolutely no nutrition in fast food. Fast food only satisfies hunger and cravings.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, fast food is not good for our health.

13 Music

Do you agree with the saying that music is one of the most important aspects of our lives? Yes, I agree. Music definitely has a significant role in our daily activities. There are several reasons
why music is everywhere.

First of all, music is a way to express what we feel For instance, when we fall in love, we tend to listen to love songs. Another example is when we feel sad, we would listen to melancholy music, and sometimes we purposefully immerse ourselves in our emotion. it also happens when we are happy, we tend to choose cheerful songs.

Secondly, mussic helps us to reminisce about past experiences. A person's favorite song could act as a documentary for that person People with impaired brain function, like Alzheimer's, would remember the details of songs they are familiar with For instance, an elderly woman who couldn't even remember her husband's name would remember the details of how her favorite song influenced her feelings. When she listened to the music, she would associate it with the emotion that came along with the music It made the song memorable for her.

Finally, music can motivate people to make significant changes in the world and make it a better place A song with powerful lyrics could move people to do something about the problem implied in the song As an example, we can see it in Michael Jackson's "Heal the World". The lyrics empower the people of the world.

So, try to imagine that a world without music would be bland.

14 The Benefits of Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education plays a crucial role in a child's development. It provides a foundation for future learning and contributes to their overall growth and success.
Therefore, it is important to understand the benefits of early childhood education and support its implementation.
Argumentation:
Firstly, early childhood education enhances cognitive development. During the early years, children's brains are rapidly developing, and quality education in a stimulating environment can foster their cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking. 

It lays the groundwork for a lifelong love of learning and prepares them for academic success. Secondly, early childhood education promotes social and emotional development.
Through interaction with peers and teachers, children learn important social skills such as sharing, communication, and cooperation.  They also develop emotional intelligence, self-regulation, and empathy, which are crucial for building healthy relationships and navigating the challenges of life.
Furthermore, early childhood education prepares children for future success. Research shows that children who participate in high-quality early education programs are more likely to perform well academically, graduate from high school, and pursue higher education or successful careers.  

They develop a strong foundation in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving, setting them up for a lifetime of achievement. Critics may argue that early childhood education is not necessary and that children should simply play and explore.

Student A: English is often used in conveying information and knowledge at school. So, Indonesian students will have broader insights if they can speak English and regularly use it to find information. In international forums, communications are conducted in English.

The government should Provide rehabilitation Program for Drug Users

Drug users are actually ill people who need help. Rehabilitation is one of the main things they should get. Instead of punishing drug users in prisons, the government should provide rehabilitation for them.

Most users are actually victims of persuasive peddlers and they suffer from consuming the drugs. Therefore, by rehabilitating them, we are actually helping them out from traps, which they might accidentally step on.

If we only arrest drug users and send them to jail, this doesn't solve the problem as drug users will still be addicted unless proper rehabilitation is imposed to them. Providing rehabilitation programs for drug users and forcing them to participate in the programs is better than only arresting them and doing nothing to their illness. Only drug dealers, traffickers, and wholesalers should be imprisoned.

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that we can do. One of them is by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of course includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.

Local groceries don’t need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the amount of carbon dioxide produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by buying local groceries we are helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.

Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving energy means reducing carbon dioxide and money.

So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.

The use of formalin and other dangerous preservatives in food has been serious problem for three reasons. Firstly, formalin is not for human beings, but it is for biological specimens and experiments. Formalin in Biology is a 10% solution of formaldehyde in water which is usually used as a disinfectant or to preserve biological specimens. Thus, it is not for food preservatives. Of course when it is used for food preservative, it will be very dangerous to human’s body.

The second reason is that there is no tight control from the government. This condition makes the people’s health is really in a threat. When the control is weak and the use formalin was spread wide all over the Indonesian regions, and these days it has really happened, the citizen's bodies will be badly contaminated with the poisons. Fish or food traders still sell their products which contain formalin and dangerous preservatives. Can you imagine that our digestive system absorbs the substance that should be for the human and animal corpses?

Considering the reasons, we can make a conclusion that the use of formalin and other preservatives is really a serious problem if it is not resolved immediately.

The condition of uncleanliness and discomfort really hinders learning and teaching environment. Litters thrown carelessly cause disease, especially empty plastic cup or glasses. They can be filled out with water coming from the rain. This can be placed for dengue mosquitoes to spread out. Besides, these rubbish can deteriorate the scenE. Well painted wall and green school yard do not mean anything litters are scattered everywherE.
Anyway I notice that most of the students in our school have responsibilities for the school environment. They put their litters on the proper places. But some are not diligent enough to find the dust bins. The numbers of dust binds in our schools are not enough. Ore dust bins should be put beside each of steps, outside of the classrooms, and some more also the corridors. Probably one dust bin should be in every ten meters. So when students want to throw away their litters, they can find the dust bins easily.

School uniform is special clothes worn by all students of a particular school. The uniform of a school may differ from others. Why should schools use uniforms? Below are some reasons.
First of all, Notre Dame’s Department of Sociology produced a study in 1998 concerning school uniforms. Their findings using 10th grade students showed that uniforms have no direct effect on “substance abuse, behavioral problems or attendancE.” It also claimed a negative effect on student achievements for those students considered ‘pro-school’.
Secondly, uniform helps to create a strong sense school ethos and a sense of belonging to a particular community. As such it promotes discipline and helps to drive up academic standards, which is why a uniform is often adopted by schools which are being reopened with a fresh start after being classified as failing.
Finally, uniform acts as a social leveler, under which all students are equal in the eyes of the school and of each other. In institutions without uniform students are often competitive and worry endlessly about their appearance and the clothes they should wear. Pupils without expensive designer clothes and trainers may be singled out as social outcasts, or stigmatized as being from poor backgrounds. For these reasons many parents prefer uniforms as they save them money on buying clothes for school wear. Considering the findings, schools should implement the uniform as their identity. The government should also publish some kind of rule which makes uniform compulsory for schools.
