On this page is a selection of work to demonstrate the learning that takes place in PE lessons across the school. We have included a broad range of pictures from the different aspects of PE, as well as a number of pictures showing the enrichment activities on offer at Gurnard.
In Reception and in KS1 we provide the children with a variety of experiences that ensure that they have the understanding to progress into Ks2. These are delivered through specialist teaching, access through continuous provision and varied PE lessons. They can include skills such as running, jumping, balancing and throwing; these skills are developed through multi-skills games and varied PE lessons.
The children in Reception also get an opportunity to develop their cycling skills through 'Ready Set Ride', which is a session led by a specialised sports coach and looks at developing their coordination and balance while riding a balance bike.
Within each academic year, children will focus on a wide variety of Physical Education topics: Dance, Gymnastics, Games and OAA. Children are given the opportunity to develop their fundamental skills through these topics. They will also focus on developing key skills: health and fitness; evaluating and improving and acquiring and developing skills.
Specialist PE teaching is planned by specialist sport coaches (Mr Lines, Mr Speer, Mr Strickland, Miss Shaw, Michelle and Miss King) for KS1 and 2 classes for 2 hours per week, covering the whole PE curriculum. Learning Support Assistants participate in the lessons, gaining valuable professional development, as well as supporting the pupils and coaches.

I can choose the best tactics for attacking and defending. (Ga3)
Every child is school competes in level 1 competitions against their peers at the end of a learning block. Children are also invited to after school fun sessions where we try to inspire children’s love of competing and sport. The school also plays regular level two competitions against against other local schools. This introduces a competitive element to team games and allows the children to put into practice the skills that they have developed in their lessons. These opportunities foster a sense of team spirit and cooperation amongst our children.
