Our aim is that every child at Gurnard Primary School learns how to care for, and the importance of, their physical health and mental well-being. We know that this is crucial for both success in their education and in their lives. We ensure that our PSHE curriculum teaches the knowledge and skills required for a healthy, safe and successful childhood and future. In our school, PSHE lessons are sequenced in a programme of learning from Reception up to Year 6 which ensures that children learn the skills that they need at the appropriate time for them, building on their existing skills and supporting their choices for years to come. At Gurnard, children learn about the importance of belonging to groups and the wider community, how to manage friendships and conflict, strategies for managing strong emotions and change, who they can go to for help, the importance of respect, and how to stay safe both offline and online in our increasingly-digital world. In addition, teaching staff plan and teach PSHE sessions responsively to meet the needs of individual children and classes, and to 'fill gaps' when they are identified. Each lesson takes place in a calm, positive, mutually-respectful and inclusive learning environment, where children feel comfortable to explore challenging topics, share their thoughts, ask questions and learn.
Utilising 'SCARF' recommended units, our PSHE lessons link to one whole-school theme each half term, as listed below:
Me and My Relationships
Valuing Differences
Keeping Safe
Rights and Respect
Being My Best
