Each AP Literature student is expected to read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë by the first day of class (Thursday, August 7th).
There will be a comprehensive exam over the summer reading assignment the first week of school.
As they read, students should complete a short summary at the end of each chapter noting important takeaways in their own individual voice. Students should complete annotations as they read. Some suggestions of aspects of the work to take notice of and annotate include:
Setting- physical, emotional, mental, social
Narration- Perspective, tone
Characterization- personality, thoughts, actions
Plot/Structure- order of events
Literary Devices- specifically symbolism
Gothic Genre Elements- Supernatural / Entrapment & Confinement / Boundary Transgression / Dichotomous Pairs / Duality / Haunted & Decayed Structures / Descent into Madness / Horror & Terror
Romantic Literary Movement Elements- Awareness & Acceptance of Emotions / Glorification of Nature / Individualism / Creativity & Imagination / Aesthetic Beauty / Solitude / Supernatural & Spiritual
*** Annotations to not need to be on every page, nor should they interfere with the enjoyment the books offers to a reader. Annotations should represent your impressions of the book and research about the author's use of literary elements. To earn full credit for annotations, you will need to not only underline & circle parts of the book but also make relevant and insightful commentary in the margins of the book along with the short summaries after each chapter. ***
