Students work with parent coaches in teams of 6-8 students including a mix of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders
Students and coaches work to create 3 things for competition:
A lego robot capable of completing a series of tasks
A research project with a creative solution to a real world problem
A Core Values board showing how the team has worked together along the way
Teams will form before the end of the school year and work occasionally over the summer to get ready for competition season
The challenge is revealed the first week of August and then the season begins!
Starting the 2nd week of school, teams meet 2 or 3 times per week to work on challenge materials
Competitions are late November and early December

Upcoming 2025 Season Challenge Teaser (this gives us a look at the 2025 season robot challenge board). Spoiler alert...this coming season has to do with excavation and exploration!
For a look at last year's robot challenge, you can watch the video. The project was to improve the use. It will give you an idea some of the things our robot needs to accomplish. Don't worry, you don't have to do all of them, we choose which ones to do as a team.
The Innovation project had to do with energy, you can see the challenge in this document
My child is not very available over the summer, is that a problem?
We will be meeting just a few days over the summer. If your child can make it, great! If not, we aren't going to sweat it.
My child might miss a few practices during the season, is that a problem?
Think of this like any other sport. It is OK to miss a practice now and then, but it wouldn't really be OK to miss a practice every week.
How do I get my child signed up?
Click on FLL sign up form at the top.
I'd really like ________ to be on a team with my child, how do I make that happen?
When you fill out the FLL form, put that in the comments and also indicate why. I won't promise to put them on the same team, but it will be considered as we form teams.
I live in the Gull Lake District, but my child doesn't attend Gull Lake Schools, can we still participate?
Yes, as long as you are able to get your child to practices
I have heard you need coaches, but I've never done anything with FLL before and I don't know anything about programming, can I still help?
Yes, we always need coaches, and no experiance necessary. I try to connect experianced memebers/coaches with new coaches to help. And programming/robotics is only 1/2 the battle, remember that the project/problem solving is 1/2 of the job too. There are lots of tools along the way to help you out as well, and I'll be there to offer assistance too. Bottom line, if you're willing to try, we'll make sure you are successful.
What is the cost of the program?
There is a $50 registration fee, but if you have a financial hardship, you can request a scholarship to cover the fee with no questions asked.
When is the season?
Teams start meeting regularly the 2nd week of school, and the season ends with their competition in late November or early December. If they qualify for the State competition, they will compete the 2nd or 3rd weekened in December, and that will be the end of the season.
What days and times to teams meet?
Specific days and times are determined by the team closer to the start of the school year when everyone knows their schedule a bit better. But they are 2 times during the week either right after school until 5:30, or 5:30-7:00.
