Biological & Medical Anthropology

Let's Explore: Popular/Traditional Culture & its correlation with biology and medicine

Mission of the project

I have always had curiosty and passion towards the biological field starting from childhood. My first taste of research started in a friendly exchange of frenchfries with a teacher assistant for a session with a microscope, where I would collect samples of everything in my path and placed it under the microscope ready to make my "discoveries"! Since Biology is study of life from molecular, cellular, organismal, community and global perspectives. Medical anthropology/Biological anthroplogy, condenses my passion for biology, culture and medicine into one distinct goal. Despite Medical Anthropogy being a field I have recently started to explore I find it very fascinating and will continue to explore it this year! The research I will conduct will condense both fields and apply them to primarily popular & tradtional culture across the Globe.

Specific questions I will be exploring include:

  • What is the influence of pop-culture in naming the phenotypes of fruit fly genes?

  • How do cultural factors correlate and shape genetic structures in the human population?

  • What is the influence of traditional culture in the expressions of "sicknesses" across the globe?

  • How has Cross-cultural medicine and diverse health beliefs negatively impacted people?

  • How has Cross-cultural medicine and diverse health beliefs positively impacted people?

  • What is the perspective of populations in the 1st world and 3rd world countries on modern and traditional medicine?
