About the Artwork

Created in 1581, Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan by Ilya Repin tells the story of a squabble between Ivan Ivanovich and his father, which turned deadly. It began with Ivan the Terrible beating his wife, the mother of Ivanovich, for wearing what he considered "imrpoper clothing". It's alleged that this resulted in the wife having a miscarriage. The son soon stepped in, defending his mother, and out of anger, Ivan the Terrible struck his son with his pointed staff. The injury resulted as fatal, and as Ivan was up in line for heir of the throne, it was subsequently passed down to the unsuitable and childless Feodor. It's said that this painting was done to warn people about violence and what it can bring if left unchecked.
