Western Maricopa Education Center (West-MEC) is a public school district that partners with GUHSD to provide innovative Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. West-MEC prepares students to enter the workforce, earn industry credentials, and pursue continuing education.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply for specific programs beginning in October of each year. West-MEC determines admission.

TRIO Upward Bound services are designed to improve academic performance, increase student motivation and facilitate the transition from one level of education to the next. Through this pipeline program, first-generation and/or low-income, college-bound high school students receive academic support, mentoring, university exposure and the tools to successfully graduate high school, enter college and earn a postsecondary degree.

Arizona State University and GUHSD have partnered to offer the ASU TRIO Talent Search program to Independence students and families. The program provides academic support, university exposure and the tools and resources to empower students to graduate high school ready to enroll and succeed in college.
TRIO Talent Search is a federal pre-college program developed to provide academic and support services for first-generation and/or low-income students interested in seeking higher education with the goal of earning a college degree. Enrollment in the program offers unique and enriching academic, social, cultural and college preparation activities.

The Glendale Community College ACE (Achieving a College Education) Program is an opportunity to earn up to 24 free college credits while still in high school. The ACE Program motivates underrepresented students to finish high school and continue on to complete a college degree by helping students make smooth transitions between three facets of the educational pathway: high school, community college, and university. Students can apply to the ACE Program during sophomore year.
The three main goals of the ACE Program are to:
Increase the number of students graduating from high school
Increase the number of students continuing on to college
Increase the number of students earning a degree or certificate.

The Hoop of Learning (HOL) is a scholarship-based, high school-to-college bridge program for American Indian students in high school. It gives students the opportunity to earn college credits while still attending high school. The Hoop program helps students navigate the college enrollment process and provides them with support services to ensure academic success. Students can apply to the HOL program beginning freshmen year.
