Naval Science (NJROTC)

Apollo, Cortez, Glendale, Greenway, Independence, Moon Valley and Thunderbird

Students will participate in the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program, which focuses on developing citizenship, leadership, personal responsibility, and service to the United States. Students will build skills in discipline, teamwork, and leadership while gaining an understanding of national security, the role of the military, and the importance of civic responsibility in a democratic society.

Students will have opportunities to participate in field trips and a variety of co-curricular activities, including drill team, color guard, air rifle, orienteering, academic competitions, athletics, community service, and Rocket Club. The program is designed as a four-year course of study, typically beginning in the freshman or sophomore year, with flexibility for entry and credit by semester.

Students who complete at least two years of Naval Science may be eligible for advanced status and increased pay upon enlistment in the Armed Forces or National Guard. Students may also explore scholarship opportunities through military service academies and Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs. Participation in NJROTC does not require a military service obligation.

Naval Science JROTC 1-2 Grades 9-12 2 Semesters 1 Credit

Students will be introduced to the Naval Science program and foundational concepts of leadership and citizenship. Students will explore topics including the NJROTC program, the foundations of government, Navy ships and aircraft, military customs and courtesies, uniform wear, and basic drill and ceremonies. 

Naval Science JROTC 3-4 Grades 10-12 2 Semesters 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Naval Science JROTC 1-2 or Senior Instructor recommendation 

Students will build upon foundational knowledge in the Naval Science program through intermediate study of maritime and physical sciences. Students will explore topics including maritime history, leadership, maritime geography, oceanography, meteorology, astronomy, and physical sciences. Students will also develop advanced skills in military drill and ceremonies.

Naval Science JROTC 5-6 Grades 11-12 2 Semesters 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Naval Science JROTC 3-4 or Senior Instructor recommendation 

Students will be instructed at an advanced level within the Naval Science program. Students will explore topics including sea power and national security, naval operations and support functions, military law, international law of the sea, ship construction and damage control, shipboard organization, basic seamanship, marine navigation, rules of the road and maneuvering board, and naval weapons and aircraft. Students will also supervise military drill and ceremonies.

Naval Science JROTC 7-8 Grades 12 2 Semesters 1 Credit

Prerequisite: Naval Science JROTC 5-6 or Senior Instructor recommendation 

Students will be placed in leadership roles within the Naval Science program. As senior students, they will assume responsibilities similar to those of junior officers in the Navy. Students will explore topics including human motivation, group dynamics, leadership techniques, responsibilities and qualities of a leader, and effective communication. Students will assist Naval Science instructors in the conduct of classes, serve as drill instructors, and plan, organize, and conduct extracurricular activities. Students will also plan, prepare, and present lessons in selected academic areas and evaluate subordinate performance and potential, including morale, behavior, and overall performance.
